I know it’s never going to be as quiet as a Car, especially as I don’t want to put a Bulkhead in but is there an effective way of sound deadening ?

I’ve used pads off E Bay on other vehicles that are about 12″ square but just wondered if there is anything else, especially if cheap as it’s only a hack van ?

Thinking of Ply Lining the sides as well so that will help but I want to keep just the rubber matting on the floor as I use it for the Dogs and need it to be wipeable.

    Thanks.

Instead of buying proper sound deadening use the rolls of flashing from a DIY place. Does the same job of altering the resonance of the panel which in a van is a huge thing.

If you’re ply lining then flash the panels and then add in some foam between the panel and the wood to further help.

Flashing is made of bitumen and can melt and smell if it gets hot afaik.

You can find rolls of dynamat like stuff for much less than dynamat but it’s not very widely available.

The principle is to dampen the large panels from vibrating to stop the noise being generated, rather than simply blocking the noise. Dynamat or similar is heavy sticky rubbery stuff that absorbs the vibrations.

I once travelled home from Blackpool in the back of a mk2 Escort Van, found it quite refined in comparison to the Simca 1100 that I went out in.

Used to have one, insulate behind ply lining with loft insulation, and fit false floor and fill with loft roll, keeps it warm as well. Also a curtain behind drivers cab helps

Also have a strong steel roofrack for a escort van for sale.

Use flashband. Cheap, heavy and super sticky. It’s the first thing I did to my van and it made a huge difference.

The melting in hot weather is a myth. Just don’t try to apply it in hot weather as it’s much harder to cut and the sticky stuff will glue your fingers together.

    Hire/buy a container.
    Put Escort in container.
    Walk away.

    Cheers for the ideas

No I’ve no mattress ready, not with that rear suspension anyway 😉

I agree with putting it in a container and walking away, I only got the van cheap to see if I really needed a Van or if I’d be better with a Car and to build up some no claims hopefully. I want a Caddy Maxi when funds allow but I’ve a House that needs rebuilding first.

I used to build SPL cars and the best sound deadening material is Accumat, Dynamat is a poor imitation. Have a look at K&M acoustics in Wigan. They know how to make things vv loud or vv quiet. Anyone who witnessed their transit with 12 15″ Cerwin Vega XLs and original HiFonics gen X amps will know!
