    whats the plus side…?

When the apocalypse comes, all the nations will unite in their calling for singlespeeders. We can, nay, we will save humanity…

The biggest issue in that picture is the cycling specific socks.

I switched from a SS to an Alfine for commuting on ( 15 miles each way in Devon ) because I figured it would be "easier" to grind up the hills in a lower gear when I felt under powered, and faster when I felt good.

What I have actually found is that it is easier on the bad days, and of course slower
But it isn't faster on the good days

I'm convinced that a single speed is faster than gears for commuting type riding

    Alfine?

this is the real answer to my OP.

    pity they cost so much…

Don't use a singlespeed as a means of improving your fitness and to get the weight off after 3 weeks of hard partying, it really hurts 🙂

    But then again i think i'm a bit of a sadist…

Definately makes your upper body stronger though from all the **** 🙂

There's a lot of unnecessary technology and maintenance involved in single speeding though, isn't there? For really strong legs, maximum fitness, super skills and the purest cycling experience, surely this is what you want?

You'd be right in thinking it's a bad idea. Stick with gears.

Well You don't. I have probably the skinniest legs on stw, and that didn't stop me to ride SS in the south of england.
I quite not see the difference to be honest. I am going to regret my TJ moment but here I go, I don't think there is soem research on the following topics:
    SS will **** your knees
    SS will makes you stronger
You need a beard to ride SS.

It's just another bike, sometimes more appropriate than a geared bike, sometimes less.

…You need a beard to ride SS.

That's because you're too busy riding instead of polishing the ball bearings from your jockey pulleys.

    WOW
    Is that even possible…
Still I am waiting for real science about the knee issue (and no the "I can feel my knee when riding ss" is not science).

@juan do you really think your legs are skinnier than mine ?

My legs are so skinny that even dainese shin protectors are too big (beat that :D).

Still no-one here with science about the urban myth that SS will **** your knees.

Just got back from my first proper SS ride, testing out my commute. Bit of a draggy climb that about a third of the way up I thought "I'm not gonna make this" but standing up, mashing on the pedals and a bit of dry retching and I made it[/MAN]

Turning round and coming straight back wasn't the best idea though, my legs feel worse after 90 mins on the singlespeed than they do after 4 hours in the Surrey Hills.

When can I apply for a tattoo?

I'd say the biggest issue with that picture is the cassette in the foreground….
