You don’t have to say why.

A bit peshed in Newcastle a few weeks ago, a (homeless?) busker, armed with a guitar, asked what song I’d like to hear. Pretty impressive question in itself.

I instantly picked this one without a second thought; he really did it justice.

It was only later the irony of asking a (homeless?) busker to sing this song struck me, but the meaning for me was something different, that only I know.

Anyone else with a single song they’d instantly pick in the same scenario?

Rival schools, used for glue. Not for the lyrics, just for the sound. Rough, urgent, incomprehensible, a bit muddy, reminds me of being 19, drunk, lost in a night club looking for my friends, probably being all love sick over some girl. didn’t know I liked the song at the time, then heard it 13 years later and I was right back there. Proper weird feeling!

Thanks for that, Bear. I’ve just booked tickets for the Ralph McTell concert at City Varieties. Are there any albums I should listen to as “homework” before I go?

First heard this travelling sat in a cafe in holland with a group of about 15 people none of whom I really knew. It brings me back to that feeling tbh and the chorus just summed me up at that point and blew me away.

Outkast – Hey Ya. Because it was the soundtrack to when I travelled round the work, it was everywhere.
The Twang – Either Way. Because it is kind of mine and my wife’s song.
Oasis – Rock ‘n’ Roll Star. The song I played on repeat in my youth, the best Oasis track IMO and just plain awesome.
Double 99 – Rip Groove. The song that was playing when I first entered the wonderful world of clubbing.

Some great songs, and for me bettered with the sanctity of ‘not knowing’ the reason.

Brokensoul, afraid it’s just that song that I know from his catalogue; however now knowing he’s playing at City Varieties which is only a few miles from me, makes me wonder whether I should book a ticket.

Edit: Thanks Swelper, but that wasn’t the guy. Sad story though that is. This chap was, I’d guess, earlier 40’s. Similarly though, an inspiring person and engaging. Seeing his situation, and his apparent talent, was quite humbling.

This one may not be obvious, but I heard it shortly after my Dad died and it rang quite true (the verse at 1:25):

probably means a lot to a few other people too, but I spent a fair bit of time knocking around psychiatric units in my late teens and early twenties and hung out with some crazy diamonds..

I was thinking about this, and one song suddenly came back to me, Nanci Griffith’s If Wishes were Changes
She wrote it after seeing Wim Wenders’ film Wings Of Desire, in London, and the words had a special resonance for me, because around the same time I broke up with someone I loved dearly, for reasons that seemed right at the time, but that turned out to be totally imaginary; after we met up again later, I found that if I’d only talked over what seemed to be wrong, we would have stayed together, but by this time, it was too late, and hearing this song, just now, after so many years, has brought it all back.
Possibly one of the biggest mistakes in my entire life, and breaking the heart of someone I really loved, and who loved me, I still can’t forgive myself for. 🙁

Tasmin Archer’s “Sleeping Satellites” at a similar time to KD Lang’s “Chatelaine”. I hated both tracks with a feeling bordering on violence.

I was living a life on the very edge of normality at the time, even by my mental friends’ standards. Both tracks take me back within the opening bars.

On the positive side of the coin, there’s not much to talk about. And I love music and play every day.
