So I’m malingering with a cold today, watching Frozen Planet on Netflix and definitely not thinking about the US election. And in episode 1 of Frozen Planet, David Attenborough tells you briefly about a GIGANTIC woodlouse that lives underneath the permanent ice of the Antarctic. And that’s completely mental.

Scientifically speaking, it’s a Giant Isopod, something like a Bathynomus Giganteus. They’re basically immortal, can survive without eating for years, grow to huge sizes and cannot feel human emotions such as love, happiness or ennui.

Even weirder than the existence of this horrifying animal, there is in existence an entire concept album dedicated to the Giant Isopod. This appears difficult to find today without hitting some alarming links:

However, Pocus Whiteface’s contribution to the compilation, “Giant Isopods Ate My Well Known Brand of Corn Chip” survives on Youtube. You’re welcome.

    How about hubris?

    The science is inconclusive.

Around my way they are called Cheese Bugs so that should help the song choice.

You can download the whole album! This is something I will be doing when I get home
    I love you BigDummy.

Relatives of more familiar crustaceans, and hence more distantly of insects, including the woodlouse, which they strongly resemble. Except they’re massive.
