I marshalled at High Peak Junction on Sunday for the long and medium routes. Fantastic day, great atmosphere, lots of happy people. A few casualties coming down the inclines from Middleton Top though…..

Great event, just needed to be the same weather as last year!

Thanks to the marshals, it all ran very smoothly.

I hope no one was too badly injured on the descent to Cromford? Many were walking, but many others were riding looking terrified!

Yep, we did the medium. Brilliant. 630 rims excellent on the bumpy stuff ! The new (old) standard ?

Erm’ how can one race in such clothing ?

    It’s beyond me.

Was this the thing that was so retro, nobody felt the need to wear a helmet?

On behalf of the marshalls, we appreciate your thanks – got lots on the day, in a variety of languages. And only a couple of arrogant/rude cyclists ignored me to enjoy a near death experience exiting the High Peak Junction car park on to the road 🙄

Still not actually made it to the Festival itself, despite the free pass for marshalling – just too busy with family stuff on the Saturday. I have an offer of a bike to ride it next year, but not sure my legs would get me up some of the hills on those old gears, not sure my bottle would let me get down the inclines with those old brakes.

Not aware of any broken bones on the descent, saw one guy come down in the ambulance car with a lot of dressings on his head and arm, and a fair amount of ketchup on his face. He was still smiling though!

For anyone that missed it, the Amber Ales Summer Light at the HPJ feed station was excellent. I tested the first keg when they opened it at 10:08. I know the exact time as I was checking the relationship between the sun and the yard arm.

I noted the helmet thing whilst walking the event on Saturday…..I was jealous. I wished my head had in built protective bounce-ability

    😀

I think the facial hair provided helmet like levels of protection?

Is that some sort of weird HDR effect on the car shots, i guess its a love or hate on that sort of effect though…….hate here, sorry !!

Yeah, loads of people hate HDR, it’s very marmite, so no worries

My photos and bike are in this thread-

It was fun. We were at the High Peak Junction stop on Sunday briefly on our normal bikes. I was wondering how they squared it with their insurers for helmets to be non essential. Everyone was very jolly and for what it was a fiver to get in was a bargain.

Nice pics OP, thanks for posting. That’s my mate’s Mrs in the 3rd one down, just before she demolished a very well deserved Dirty Burger*.

It’s an absolutely marvellous and unique event, a real testament to the vision and huge amounts of work the organisers have put in over the year since the inaugural running in 2014. The volunteers and marshalls deserve high praise so thank you MCTD, I think I remember saying so on Sunday but here it is again in public.

My legs have almost recovered from 55 miles with some big hills on a 1957 chrome Carlton running 50×22 singlespeed thanks to a last minute derailleur explosion. I got up everything except the last 50 meters of the last climb but perhaps that was something to do with the Cava on the lawns at Chatsworth House. Happy days, roll on next year.

    * from the well-named Patty Smith burger stall.

Cheers sturmeyarcher – if he/she wants that pic, or the unedited original, they are more than welcome and I’ll email it across

The original pic would be grand TAFKAS, email in profile. Cheers.

    JPEG or RAW?

    *edit – I’ll send both

RAW would be lovely if it’s not too big.

    Sent!

The helmet thing – you signed a disclaimer before the event. Seeing as we used to ride motorbikes without helmets when I was a lad, it all seems very over the top. However, we wore helmets, some rather fetching foldable ones which look sort of retro….
