Contemplating some solo night riding. Other than don’t take idiotic risks and being aware of insomniac axe wielding baby robins hiding in the undergrowth what should I have with me or do differently to a group night ride and any other top tips.

I night ride fairly regularly in a group but can end up missing a fair few on the trot due to work etc. so this is to help fill the gaps but also to try and get some extra riding in generally.

Spare light. It’s dark in them woods if you smash your light.

Toilet roll for when you crap yourself

Ride known trails.
Have 2 lights, one on the bars and one on the helmet for depth perception.
Make sure your battery run-time is a fair bit longer than your planned ride.
Take a spare battery.
A small torch is handy to use for mechanicals.
Let someone know where you’re going.
Remember to charge the batteries!
Warm flask in the car on your return is always good.

just tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back. That’s all you really need. I do almost all my night riding solo, and while I do have a SPOT tracker I keep forgetting it as I didn’t get it for local riding…
