    Sweaty palms watching that!

Me and t’missus got a bit too into soloing back in our climbing days; used to do a few VS, HVS and low Es roped, then pick one we felt comfy on and solo it. North Wales routes, so a few hundred feet, up to a thousand-ish for big classic 3 stars.

I used to get far more scared watching her doing it, so we both agreed it was not worth the risk and we should stop. Deep play, and all that 😯

It’s wierd really anything over 100ft solo and it’s final really. Think it’s the level of concentration required for 18hrs that scares me most

Mate of mine took a few months off work to go climbing in Yosemite. Came home with hands like the surface of the moon. But to be fair, he’s a scary bastard. The guy who taught me to climb is one of the best climbers I’ve ever met. His brother, who I refer to above, makes him look shit. I’ve seen him dyno stuff that makes me sweat just thinking about it, sitting here on my couch.

Nor is Dan any more. Huge loss of a great climber due to gear failure. Moral of this story, etc.

    Moral of this story,

don’t do long line jumps? he wasn’t climbing at the time, just being a loon

Sorry chaps, I know little about climbing, but I find this truly awe inspiring. Forgive my ignorance but who is ‘Dan’ and do you have any relavent links.

    Thanks

What a coincidence. I was just this week trying to remember Dan Osman’s name. I read an article on him back in the 90s (Details magazine if anyone remembers that) shortly after his death.

Rubber Duck, if I remember correctly he pioneered in free climbing and rope jumping, and as the video shows had that 90s ‘wild child’ thing going on. After setting up a jump he was found with a pistol in his truck’s cubby hole by a park ranger (I think), and was sent down for a few months. The first thing he did on release was drive back to the jump, but the ropes had perished while he was away, so snapped with fatal consequences.

I could be wrong but I think that was the general gist of it.

    don’t do long line jumps?

Well, yes, but I was thinking “check your gear.”

Apparently, Dan Osman got into the rope jump thing because he realised he got more of a kick out of long lead falls than the climbing itself.

The impression I get from Alex Honold is that he’s a much more considered climber, looking to push a discipline, rather than scare himself silly. Doubt he’s got a drug problem!

But he pulled on the gear. At that point he should have climbed down and come back another day when he was strong enough to climb it clean.

Yes Edukator, of course. Even if he was closer to the top, he should have climbed down. Ethics before safety. Even if he didn’t “claim” it. Did he?

as amazing as his feat is, I can’t help thinking he’s gonna end up becoming another John bachar!

Anyone else snigger at the ‘coming fall’ caption at the end of the first clip?

But he pulled on the gear

It’s an aid route is it not?

    Ethics are a movable feast.
