The John Lewis one is brilliant, just a couple of sticks and a carrot to show emotion. Some serious talent there

As Charlie says; ‘We’ve become a species that weeps at adverts for shops.’

Get a grip, for everyones sake. It’s not great art, it’s to make you give money to people for shit that you probably don’t want to buy and that they probably don’t need.

First time I saw it tonight and googled the music seems to be just a cut down version of Power of Love and not a full song 🙁

Fun times in the Crikey household, this Christmas then…

Did the same last year. Took a classic song, and butchered it.

Nope, it’s not art but it IS very well done

it’s to make you give money to people for shit that you probably don’t want to buy and that they probably don’t need.

I’d happily settle for gloves and a scarf every time, oh and socks. The trick is in not spending much money but finding the time to get something appropriate. Long term faves are a multitool I’ve had for 10 years now and a park triple allen key.

Runs off to watch it again to upset crikey

Bah Humbug Bollocks to the lot of you!

I like Christmas, I enjoy Christmas, I celebrate Christmas in a hearty and pagan way.

I don’t fall for all that advertising/marketing bullshit.

Crying at the poor ickle snowman going to the big shop to buy his snowlady some lovely gloves? Really?

    GTF.

Last years was good, in a rose-tinted – looking back at childhood sort of way. Classic tune helped.

Does everybody somehow forget the John Lewis exists in the 11 months since the previous Christmas?

I can only assume we do seeing as they spend £6m reminding us they’re there.

Christmas occurs exactly every 12 months, so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise.

6 million quid, you gotta be shitting me!

I think that nicely sums up the hypocrisy of xmas and advertising in general

She was on the Radio today, I was only half listening but sure it’s being released.

    And here you go.

I was horrified to realise that Halfords are using “Into the valley” as their christmas music!!

No, it’s not art, but it uses elements of art to elicit an emotional response. And actually, it does it very well. I didn’t actually tear up, but I was moved (after being determined not to be) and *that* is what artists aim for, in the main.

If I had a budget of six mill, I would pay someone to punch people in the balls at 20p a punch. But no-one would come to my shop 😥

EDIT: Oh and Mr Nutt – they’ve been using that music all year and the ad was bloody brilliant.

The question is: other than the life-changing experience watching the ad, did any of you get an inexplicable urge to shop at John Lewis?

If not, it’s an utter waste of £6m.

I think Rachel popped in to get some tissues…

    So only £5,999,998 wasted.

…probably less than that, as I imagine tissues are quite pricey in JL.

I think it’s Waitrose for tissues…unless they have some in the haberdashery department.

They will price match. It’s in their charter. So if you paid £2 for tissues, without getting them to check poundland’s price, who’s the mug now eh?

Nah, they did their ‘never knowingly undersold’ ad a couple of months ago, with the parallel lives, that was good.

I can’t believe how strongly people (well Crikey) feel about this sort of thing, crazy!

Yeah always make me laugh it’s hardly something new advertising and even more so at Xmas.
