  • So I've just got back from the casino…. (not what I expected)

New one in town! For some reason I expected many a flash fooker throwing 20’s at the table but not so! I listened in to one clearly disturbing conversation of a bloke telling his mrs how this was gonna be his spin on the roulette, and also watched some football looking (twT) player type chucking stupid money away, but all in all I rather enjoyed it!!! Nice few cocktails and a good laugh!!

I used to be a croupier, casinos are horrible places owned by horrible people.

Love the idea of casinos. The last one I went to was very seedy indeed. Not what I’d expected at all.

I’d love to have the balls to play cash games of Hold ‘Em in a casino.
A friend told me of how he reached for the pot with shaking hands after he got lucky and won a decent amount in Vegas. The glaring hatred of the other players in the hand made him leave quite quickly!

Well I know someones whose Dad was a cronic gambler. As small children they had to wait in the car outside whilst he danced with Lady Luck. Nowt glamorous IMO.

Been in casinos in three or four different countries now and not one of them was how I expected them to be. All pretty seedy with some dodgy people in.

But, haven’t been to Vegas yet, so it could be just the ones in London, Barcelona, Edinburgh and Amsterdam that have put me off.

The one’s in Vegas are worse:

Just as seedy, dodgy and nasty as the ones over here, but on a larger scale.

It’s a horrible place – like Blackpool but with worse acts and very bland food.

Some of the buildings are impressive, but then so is Rochdale Town Hall.

If there was bright lighting you would see how threadbare and dingy they are. Spent a night in the casino in Perth WA where a bloke I had just met blew about 6000 dollars he was very pissed, enjoy being a voyeur in Vegas but always feel a dit dirty. I am way to tight to gamble 😳

Been to Vegas once, for 3 days, hated it. Full of sad desperate people (the casinos that is) as above it’s like Blackpool on steroids.
Some of the nightclubs and restaurants were ok. If I was to go back it’d be to use Vegas as a base for a driving holiday

We were on a night out and ended up at a casino. I’m way too tight to gamble so just watched mainly.

After a bit a mate asked me to take over his hand at “21” while he nipped to the loo, on the understanding I could keep whatever I won.

I won a few quid and then continued with my winnings on his return and then promptly stopped at the point when my winnings pot matched what I’d already spent that night out, plus my casino membership joining fee.

    Free night out, result.

Horrible place with no windows. Seemed odd when we walked out and it was suddenly morning.

You will rarely see a clock in a casino for this very reason.

fair play to STW how many other forums can slip in a reference to Rochdale Town Hall’s elegant architechture, amidst refrences to seedy and professional football.

Was it one of those experiences (being a croupier) that sounded cool but was in fact utterly depressing?

Interested as I’d always fancied giving it a go.

Been to quite a few with friends, however I’m not bright enough to understand some of the games and am too tight to spend money at them. Do enjoy people watching though.

There was no element of seedy joint whatsoever, perhaps because it’s less than six months old. Friendly (apart from one dealer) staff, lovely bar and nice champagne cocktails! We had a good laugh watched some throw silly money away and others just have a good time! The entire night cost me just over 9 quid!! Only gripe is its 5 quid min on red or black and 3 quid a hand for blackjack?

Not sure about this as “the house always wins”

    Presume you’re talking morally?

Have to disagree about Vegas …

    IT ROCKS ….

but then again I love casinos for a differant night out.

I treat it like a trip to the races, plan how much you are willing to spend on your day / night out and take that much along with you.

If at the end of the night you are not spent up then it’s a bonus

Why not try a hold em tourney first, Leeds Gala has buy ins from £20 up depending on the night and you know how much you are going to spend, it will give you the live experience so you can get a feel for the “etiquette ” of the live game,
Speaking of which I would think that your mate reaching for the pot was the point the other players didn’t like, notthe fact he won it, lettting the dealer push the pot towards you then pull it in is the correct ” ettiquette “

And I far prefer the live game to online, no screen to hide behind so I can see your trembling hands as you make that all in bluff with nothing

Neal, there were loads of groups of friends of all ages doing the learn to play thing, they were all laughing and having a great time! Much the same as when you go to the horse racing or even a night out at the dogs! If you haven’t got the will power to take x amount of quid out and stop when it’s gone then you shouldn’t be anywhere near the place!!

+ 1 for Alea Leeds as well as Gala,

Do they still do the free Chinese buffet on some poker nights ?

Yeah, enjoy playing tourneys – small time stuff, but I love the cash game. At least I prefer the cash game online.

    Need to MTFU I suppose.

Agree with all that. We had a great laugh with a group of mates when we went.
Did a learn to play thing as most had never played before.
Even for those who had, it was a great night.

They did the last time we went, was about 3 months ago a bit before christmas.

you only have to walk into any bookmakers to see what chronic, obessive, compulsive gambling disorder does to people. gambling is a losers game, pub fruit machines, all of it. Greed eating people alive.

Whilst this is certainly true of some (most?), the actual game playing can be fun. Like everything, moderation is the key.
