The long running threads, primarily the Trump, Referendum and religion threads but also others, are generating a *lot* of reported posts. Time and again it’s the same names cropping up either doing the reporting or being reported.

I for one do not have the time to pick back through thousand-post threads ascertaining who’s in the right between “he said she said…” So it stops, as of right now. We cannot possibly moderate these threads effectively, we don’t have the resource.

Please treat your fellow man with respect even if they are being an arse. The forum T&Cs are very clear on this.

If we get one more reported post of someone being a bellend on these threads, irrespective of who’s guilty or innocent I’ll blanket ban all the big hitter parties for a month and to hell with collateral damage.

Respect is earned. Respect is not to be confused with fear. Collective punishments reduce respect for any institution imposing them. Think back to school. They facilitate bullying creating a negative dynamic in which victims are doubly punished. The good student who is also a keen swimmer misses out on his swim session because the bully group gets the whole class caught up in a detention.

You know who the villains are Cougar, and the guy who’s served the longest ban and still come back isn’t one of them. While the sniping, sneering condescending villain of the piece continues the taunting with impunity, I’ve come to assume the villain benefits from immunity due to a share holding or something.

Anyhow, what works in a school will work here, “firm but fair”. If anyone who gets a ban can see at least some justification then you’ll still earn and merit our respect (because you do), start punnishing the victims and the bullies will reign supreme.

If you’re really fed up with it, take a break Cougar, if you’re going to continue doing it, do it right.

Here’s the thing though, this isn’t a democracy and sure as hell doesn’t have to be fair. If YOU don’t like it YOU can take a break. I did, well after my last ban ended, because I was sick of the constant word twisting and often downright fantasy being applied to the things I say by the same people. The first person you refer to (assuming TJ here) was one of them and in fact the one that wound me up so much I lost my temper and posted a rant that got me banned.

Frankly I’m still sick of the passive aggressive BS on here, if this was a pub most of the “big hitters” would have been barred or glassed long ago. A lot of people need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask if they really would treat people the way they do on here. THM isn’t the only villain (again, assuming he is no.2) and to his credit has the decency not to make stuff up to be outraged by. Just because you agree or disagree with someone doesn’t make them better or worse than you.

So yeah, as critical as I can be of this place and the mods I’m glad they are taking a stand. Frankly if a few folk buggered off never to return I don’t think the place would be any the poorer for it.

TL:dR – live with the rules or leave.

Would it work if there were some sort of deputy mod? These people, could monitor specific subject areas, i.e. religion, North American politics or European politics., veganism etcetera. Each deputy mob would only then need to follow one or two threads more closely and deal with any issues. They could then escalate any problems to a mod which may prevent large scale bans. This might take the pressure off mods who oversee the forum as a whole. It would be preferable the deputy mods have a grounded understanding of their specialised subjects though, to reduce personal bitching or confusion.

Divisive topics lead to divisive opinions, however, the aggressive and sometimes passive-aggressive way in which opinions are sometimes expressed is a shame. Perhaps subject related bans for persistent offenders?

I would prefer it for this forum not to resort to ‘posts awaiting moderation’.

Either way I don’t envy the task of the mods.

I know this will never happen*, but some forums have a bunfight section where all the angry adult sized toddlers can throw poo at each other to their hearts content. No rules, no reporting etc.

We want to encourage people to report things, not the opposite. Reporting posts isn’t a problem, rather that it’s difficult to make a decision on who’s in the right / wrong when there’s a thousand pages of context.
