The optimist in me predicts lots of snow in 3 weeks time…
    what tyres should i hoard??

Either for a 26″ FS (currently tubeless specialized butcher on the front and ardent on the back)
    Or for my Ti tripster 700c / 29″ up to about 42c / 2″

I have some of these bad boys for my 26″ rough weather commuter:

They are pretty unstoppable. But they do weigh a ton.

Ive never ridden in the snow before so was just considering being prepared..

Doubt 26x anything over 3.8 at <6ps will fit my frame / forks

Do you need spikes or just something large, nobbly and run at 20psi??

I used mud tyres and they worked fantastically till you hit ice, other than that they were fantastic

Spikes are for ice. Anything with knobbles works for snow. Generally, the bigger the better.

Edit: that said, it depends a lot on the type of snow.

I bought a pair for last winter when we didn’t have any snow worth speaking of so they didn’t get used.

Can anybody find that fantastic video of the guys on spikes riding up and then down a frozen creek in Canada or Sweden?

Trailrakers work well in snow, especially 1.9″.

I have Ice Spiker Pros for when it gets compacted/icy. The draggiest 12 mile commute in history. Each way. Just for the satisfaction of taking phone calls from colleagues who can’t get in from 2 miles away as they can’t get their car off the drive.

The one and only expensive bike purchase MrsMC has ever encouraged, after I staggered through the door a few years ago having slid along an icy road with my bike helmet bouncing on the tarmac, narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic, and then ridden the next 9 miles very dazed and confused.

Mud tyres will work on fresh snow (to about 6” – then you really have to start down gearing), but as soon as it gets a bit frozen/compacted spikes really start to help.

Bought ice spikers 4 years ago and have used them about 10x going up the local hills and stuff, they nearly reduced me to tears when trying to commute in on time when bedding them in, it’s like pulling apart Velcro.
