Can anyone recommend a smallish light lock that doesn’t cost the earth? It will only be used to lock the bike up while I nip into the shop.

Can anyone reccomend a smallish light set of bolt cutters to cut through smallish light locks people have used to lock their bikes up while they nip into the shop?

This is close to the lock I have on my commuter, which has survived an attack with 36″ bolt cutters:

Cheap flimsy locks are false economy.

I use one of these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=38259

stops anyone from just wandering off with my bike, unless they came equipped for bike theft, in which case they’d probably be able to take it regardless of what lock i’ve put on it.

Note: this only applies to my pub bike. I don’t leave my decent bikes unattended outside shops.

    Padlock through the disc brake?

Good way to prevent a ride-away theft anyway.

Or unless they went to my school where I mastered opening crappy combination locks like that in a matter of seconds. 😀

I should have said I don’t live in a ghetto, the bike will be in eyesight most of the time, just need something to stop folk lifting it.

How about a TiGr lock? http://tigrlock.com/

Not small, but frame-mounted and a third the weight of a U-lock.

Graham – looks good but far to expensive.

Ideally it would fit in my pocket too.
I’m not asking for much eh?

I’ve just bought this one for locking my commuter when in the gym and you can store it on the frame.

Don’t know how good it is but it’s only my commuter. Certainly wouldn’t use it or any other small lock for that matter on any of my better bikes, but for a hack it seems ok.

Caveat emptor. It’s your bike, not mine.

A friend had her bike stolen the other day, in a ‘nice’ neighbourhood. She was only in the shop for a few minutes. Decent lock on it too. It can happen anywhere.

Get something that you can wear as a belt, much easier to manage the weight of a decent lock that way, hardly noticeable.

Or a small D lock might do – depends what you can lock it against.

One of these? Obviously wouldn’t want to be out of site of the bike for long, but i reckon it would do for nipping into a garage or shop for a few seconds.

Mmm, about 3 femtoseconds to cut one of those. Probably safer to take the wheel into the shop with you

Any small light lock isn’t going to stop someone with tools, so why burden yourself with extra weight/bulk, besides the cable inside alot of those cheap plastic wrapped locks are probably the same thickness if not thinner.

I use the abus type when out on my road bike. Not in a crime hotspot so just a bit of piece of mind if you need to leave your bike momentarily.

I got one of those japanese flouro locks off on one,it was about 3£.used it once or twice, seems allright.
Now,the supercheap bar tape I got in the same order…
I’d get pitlock skewers.or at least those allen ones with the hollow allen key.

I keep one of these in my bag for mtb’ing http://www.roughrideguide.co.uk/Lock.html
stops opportunist thieves, but of course won;t hold off anyone properly prepared, but then most things won’t or will weigh more.

Jmenorton, that wee lock looks pretty good. Singletracksurfer, your oxford thingy looks good for the money too.
