My XT shifters have just died after 5 – 6 years. Since then all sorts have changed! A mate has some XT ones that shift the other direction to mine? My rear and front mech use the same old classic system.

Will the above be compatible?

Yup, will be fine and work as you expect, but you’ll also be able to push the “finger” lever forwards with your thumb which is really quite nice. Your mate’s reverse shifting is probably due to a rapid rise rear mech where the spring pulls in the opposite direction, rather than the shifters.
