  • SLX brakes- making them less grabby?

So I’ve been out on my new bike few times and the SLX brakes feel super powerful but very grabby. It feels like once the pads are on the rotor and you’re actually breaking there’s some modulation, but it feels like the pads really grab at the rotor on first contact. It’s a bigger rotor on the front than I’ve had before so do I just need to get used to it or is there anything I can do? Rotor seems straight, dunno what type pads are.

Bigger rotors should provide more modulation and more power, I think.

    You’ll get used to them

A bit of lithium grease on the pads should sort that problem right out. if it doesn’t, add a liberal spray of GT85 to the rotors.

The big front rotor will be making it feel grabbier. Harder pads, such as sintered will grab less.

I changed from hopes to shinano xt a year or so ago. They feel at first that there is less modulation and more ‘grab’ but also stacks more power. I just got used to it, brake later and less often!

If your still on the pads which came with the brakes then they should be resin, otherwise just get used to going sidewards everywhere.

    Get used to immense power.

I found that when I first got them, but got used to it. My old brakes needed two fingered braking on steep hills, where as the SLXs were fine with just a single digit. So I was just grabbing too much brake!

Get used to it – it’s great haviong the power on tap and your hands will adjust to the sensitivity and modulation 😀

    Also, single finger braking FTW.

you’ll get used to them and then nearly die when you use other inferior products.

Thanks all. Fiddled about a bit with the lever reach yesterday and they felt a bit better with the better control I had with the stroke of my fingers(!?) when wound further out. Been 2 finger braking, will try moving the levers a bit to make 1 finger more obvious.

Love my xt. Pretty much the same as slx. Loads of confidence and, yes, one finger braking. Super control and less effort. Win win.

I found them really grabby, stopped riding the missus bike and went back to my Tech M4’s same power just with control.
