A friend of mine has just got into cycling (just the dark side so far!) and wants me to join him for 30 miler or so. I think I'd rather put some slicker rubber on to do that distance on the road on my hardtail. if nothing else just so don't use all my energy keeping up with a road bike!
any reccomendations. mavic 717 (IIRC) rims btw.

    Too many too list!

I've stuck with Schwalbe Marathon Plus for the puncture protection and losing out on weight but hey I rather be a minute later than walking.

Contis will be faster than the plus but Schwalbe do a fast version with less weight but not as puncture resistant as the plus.

Depends on what your needs are-there loads of tyres out there.

the sport contacts are pretty damn good, ive ridden a fair amount of off road on them (handling was interesting to say the least) and still no punctures
