Just got my Bossnut in 17.5 guise. I’m 5ft 10

My old bike (90s clockwork) gives me a really bad neck after long rides, and I think this is due to the head down bum up set up, making me tilt my head all the way back.

Does this 17.5 look too small on me? I’m going to check out the 19.5 again, and spend a bit more time working out my reach and head angle, but wanted to know if it looked “right” or “wrong”.

2nd pic looks ‘better’ to me, but i’d have to see you on the 19″ bossnut before saying you nailed it.

you *could* try raising your saddle a touch..?

Yeah, think the saddle was a bit low as my leg wasn’t extended enough. My reckoning is that this would raise my arse more, and make the tilting head/neck thing worse.

For comfort, I think I’m looking for a more upright position.

Sizing looks fine. The front end looks a little low though. Have you set the sag right?

dare i say it they both look far too small.

No idea about the sag. Will check when I’m in the shop today.

I know it’s almost impossible/pointless for others to speculate, but looking at the pic, do you think the 19.5 is likely to be less of a better fit?

I’m 5ft 10, and everything on the (dreaded) internet seems to suggest I should be on a 19(ish) sized frame.

    Cheers

can we see you on the 19″?

    (Pinnie optional)

it’s just my gut feeling, but i think it’ll ‘look’ a better fit…

Doubt I’ll post a pic of the 19. I’m taking the 17 back today and making a decision. I guess the real critical thing with the 19 is to make sure the reach isn’t too long.

looks too small to me too, unless you like riding around bolt upright with your arms dead straight, which some people do

    Who’s Hora and Renton?

forum regulars. with … reputations for buying bikes the wrong size.

phase 1: “this bike is amazing, you’re all wrong, it’s the perfect size for me”.

phase 2: “something’s not quite right, i’ll change the stem, bars, seatpost, wheelsize, trying to fix it”.

phase 3: sells the bike, buys another, once again too small, repeat.

we all do it (just some people are more honest about it).

Is it your shorter friends bike? Fine for jumping in the woods but if you want to ride any distance to those woods you’ll need a bigger bike

the thing with a longer bike is you can always pull the reach figure back with a shorter stem

    Another vote for too small.

Something a little larger would suit Sir…

    The 19.5

Feels bigger for sure. Reach and neck angle feel similar. Bike feels a lot bigger overall.

    Right on the fence

Have you got the pinnie on under that hoody?

Do they do an XL? Still looks a touch short to me.

The 17.5 with same backdrop for proper comparison

17.5 seat tube maxed. 19.5, the seat tube is quite short, 130mm out. This enough for a dropper?

I think you want to try the next size up too if one is available.

OP your modern bike looks short?

My medium Commencal AM V4 is a lonnngg bike so medium in that is way better than a medium on a older Santa Cruz for instance.

Ride what you like. Slacker bikes don’t need to be gatelike.

    Agreed.

First is too small, that can be adjusted, but better to start a little bigger – if only for the taller front end you are looking for.

I’d be trying the next size up from the 19.5 myself as that still doesn’t look quite big enough either but it is much better than the 17…

Your a ‘big 5ft10’ or that bike is very short on the effective TT?

    19.5.
    Still loads of standover.
The reach is less than my Bird and I’m also 5’10”

From the pic I’m surprised that you’ve only got 130mm of post out though. Looks a long way up.
Standard 125mm reverb needs 195mm from top of frame collar to centre of saddle rails according to this graphic from alltricks:

    Went with the 19.5
