    I can measure the tyre clearance but how can I find out what the max size tyres that I can use are?

    Check on the website for the manufacturer of the rim.
    For example, Mavic state that Crossmax ST should have max 2.3″ tyres,

    thanks, my wife’s bike is a 2013 Boardman hybrid but has no-name rims
    any ideas?

    there’s loads of tyre clearance but not sure what will fit

    Measure the internal width, this may give some guide. For example, the Crossmax St above have a 19mm internal width, for Mavic XC717 with 17 mm internal width, they suggest 2.1″ max
