Just for some inspiration and ideas of what frames as eldest son starts to outgrow a kids Scott.

No pics yet, but I've just bought my lad a Specialized Big Hit Grom frame, 24" wheel but also takes a 26" when he gets bigger.

I believe it's an older model but it comes with an air can and I've just got some cheap air tora's to go on the front. Wheels should be ready next week then we can hit the trails.

Bikescene had 2 of the frames in stock and I think the other one is still there.

I've singlespeeded his old Scott for use in the skate park and razzing about the streets…

Here's his other 24" wheeled bike. Now with Tiagra rear mech after he crashed and wrecked that one.

If your looking to build something, the Santa Cruz Juliana frame has a short top tube and would work with 24" wheels, would probably be quite slack too with a 140mm fork. Depends on your budget I suppose.

A lad at work is looking at 14" On-Ones – possibly the Whippet. I guess if you get a disc brake frame build it with 24" wheels and up it to 26" when the time comes.

Apart from that I'm no use – my lad's still on 14" wheels.

On one 14 inch frames are not great for short people as the TT is very long. I had one as I'm vetically challenged, 27 inch inside leg..
Got a cotic bfe xs , much shorter. would do 24inch wheels fine. I also have a Mountain Cycles Battery which is brill for small peeps.

Just got this 14 inch cube acid last week. It's got one of the shorter TT's and seat tubes I could find. Flipped the stem, adjusted the reach on the levers, saddle forward and took an inch off each side of the bars. May go for a 20 mm shorter stem and flat bars, but he's not complaining 🙂 . Proper first ride tomorrow.

    One happy customer

interesting thread…my 10 year old is bigger than my 13 year old and i'm building a bike for the 13 year old to take down the local bmx track, i've just picked up a cannondale frame and have put 24" wheels on that were spare and it looks good, but what do i do for brakes as i doubt the usual v brakes will fit the 24" wheels?? anywayz will keep my eye on this thread for ideas.

Disc brakes then wheel size doesn't matter. BMXs don't bother with brakes as far as I can see. 🙂

Got two Carrerra Kraken frames off eBay for £14 each. Built one up with 26" wheels for my 10-year-old son and one with 24" wheels for my 8-year-old daughter.

This is the 26" one. Apart from the forks, which were some spares with a too short steerer I had knocking about, everything else was from the classifieds/eBay.

damm you just hopped on to see what i might get my 11 year old next.. and accidentally bought one too.. oh well! Took both boys to their first trail centre trip and wanted to try a black so sessioned this corner on gulley monster at fochabers. proud dad picture coming…

Both lads on sepcialist hot rocks, a 20 and a 24… The hotrock 20 gearing is rubbish so i rebuilt the rear wheel on an old XT hub and put a 9 speed mega range cassette on it so at least its climbable.

Can i ask, my next concern is this frame will be built up with bits from my hardtail, but its his only bike. dont want it to get knicked/abused! Do your kids have cheapy run arounds and a proper bike, or just one proper bike?

hmmmm. Some nice bikes there. If anyone is selling a 24" wheeled beast, let me know!

Tempted by the Isla Bikes 24" option. It will do the rounds of our three lads, so worth splashing cash and getting a better one I think.

No, they need both – otherwise you'll be paranoid and/or they'll never go without you. We kept my sons old Trek for this.
