Just a nice pic of the cranks/arms and Ring please.

A description of components would be nice too.

Love the concept of the 1×10 but struggling with the aesthetics.

Gives a better chainline on the inner cassette sprocket

Mine’s a double crank – so it’s in the outer ring position of 2 (ie same chainline as middle on a triple).

It’s a ball ache because 88mm BCD rings are hard to come by.

What a strange comment. I’ve never seen a top level roadie with a single ring, nor have I see a WC DH bike with anything more than 1…

Is nobody using one of those Bionicon guides that hang off the chainstay? Are they viable as the only chainguide for a 1x** XC bike?

    kiwijohn
    Full Member

No, you need a guide on the top.

Why are those chainguides so huge and plasticky?

Would it work with an outer bashring and something like one of those roadie chainsavers on the inside?

Yep. Plenty of people running an n-gear jumpstop and a bash.

Yeah. Once upon a time i had the E-13 SRS and it was a bit noisy actually.

Hence why i’ve now gone for the simple top guide which looks like it should be silent.

I used a stinger before and it wasn’t totally silent, quieter than the superstar one I have now but still not silent.

Clutch derailleur and upper guide would be the quietest solution I reckon. ?

Not a great photo, but setup is an old M760 XT crank, a 32T Gusset chainring, MRP Lopes SL chainguide, 11-36 XT cassette and XT medium cage mech.

Works fine for me, and I can get up pretty much any climb on it still with the 32T ring. I tried a 36 but it was a bit tall for me, tempted to try a 33 or 34 for a tiny bit more speed but to be fair, it’s not often I spin out 32/11 unless I’m onroad going downhill.

No, you need a guide on the top.

So how are these clutch rear mechs going to solve this problem (as I read)? Still need a top guide as well?

My DSX is virtually silent. I couldn’t seem to set up a Plasma quiet enough so bought the DSX. Its been great so far except the bashring bolt area finally cracking. Filled it with epoxy.

Yep. Plenty of people running an n-gear jumpstop and a bash.

And it works very well, based on my experience. Haven’t lost a chain yet, running 1×9 and 1×10, with a ramped Deore 32t when 1×9 and Hope SS 32t for 1×10. Cranks are some Truvativ ones (from my old Boardman), Truvativ bash (Delft chinaware stylee), SLX 11-36 cassette and X9 mech.

1 x 9 Never lost the chain yet and I run my chain a few links longer than most…and I don’t pootle either.
Got a Saint rear mech which may help though. Two alu bashguards from http://www.bbgbashguard.com/

Yep, mine’s FS with top only. Never had issues dropping the chain, don’t pedal backwards is a good start I guess. Dunno otherwise, are you inherently more likely to lose the chain on a FS?
