It struggles with the fact that the one good idea from the start doesn’t quite know where it is going. Film 2 was made with a definite there will be a 3rd so was just a halfway house really.
Most successful multipart things have the ending before they start ie based on books etc. rather than stringing it along.
As an example a few of the big 5 part american TV series seem to have the full plot drawn out before they start then just fill in the detail around it.
Sometimes though people need to have the balls to make films like Inception where the ending is not the end, leaves you with questions and walk away. It was never meant to be answered, the only answer is what you come up with. The other competing force is that you can create characters that we invest heavily in that we want to know what happened to them – 2 more films about how they took up knitting and leaned how to make a proper pot of tea would have been more of a let down.
