I read an article about training after eating no food can be used sparingly to increase your endurance. anyway, I'm going for a two hour easy spin after work (about 4pm) I haven't had any lunch yet and I can't really be bothered to get any. Should I, or should I ride only on porridge and toast for breakfast and see what happens? Normally I eat loads before and during a ride.

Have you seen those fellas that beat the bejeesus out of themselves with some sort of whip thing, shredding their back util it looks like the offal counter at the butchers?

If you want to stand a better chance of keeping warm then eat. Your body will use up more fuel trying just to keep you warm, then you've got the exercise to fuel on top of that.

I believe last months Outdoor Fitness magazine had an article which suggested that going for a long slow ride could encourage the body to burn fat for fuel rather then using glycogen from muscle. It also made reference to riding/running before breakfast so that body uses fat for fuel.
How true this is I can't say but in theory if you havent eaten since breakfast you should have depleted your glycogen stores so will happily burn fat instead.

Whats the point in all that bull shit. You need food for energy! They have have done evrything to death in health mags and now need to come out with complete pap in order to just to write something!
Even if it was true whats the point in having a empty hungry belly in order for what? The small percentage of riders who need to try all these things are top pros who earn a good living from sports.
