    will a shimano road 10 speed chain work with 3×10 xtr 10 speed ?

    If it’s the latest generation XTR then I believe not but it used to work fine with the previous version of XTR.

    Yes it will.

    They are different – the outer plates are differently profiled to optimise shifting, but they are cross compatible (IMO with no discernible difference). I’m using an Ultegra on my MTB.

    njee – are you using 3×10 M985 trail chainste and XTR 10 speed cassette ?

    Don’t forget that shimano road chains used to be directional. Latest ones are bi-directional. Double check before fitting.
