Cotic mailshot details their Shand built Rocket prototype.

That’s got to press a couple button on here!

I don’t really like ‘posting’ other peoples photos but some bike porn can be found here:

    Never thought of looking there….

    No wonder I couldn’t find a thread…. 😳

Interesting the standard Rocket geo was felt better than the more progressive. Is that just familiarity?

    Love to hear more.

Not sure if you’ve read the mailshot but this is about as comprehensive as you’ll get (i.e. Straight from the horses mouth):

Just wish they’d painted it in the Cotic yellow

I do really like the look of that.

I **** love my Rocket. It’s a really sorted bike, I almost feel competent riding it. Not sure it would benefit from being much slacker, although I have pondered a slightly steeper seat angle (i.e. I think I need to move my saddle forward a touch). 😉

I do like that paintjob, especially the orange stripe down the back of the seat tube, very nice.

It totally passed me by at Bespoked 😳

It looks outwardly similar to the Mojo Nicolai. Long, low, slack.

I thought the Cotic appeal was its steel construction ? You start sticking bits of carbon in there and you might as well go the whole hog !!!

    Or not! 😉

Steel front, carbon rear, made in the UK. Only 7 exist! Adrian built the rear of the Cotic above.

I like how Cy heard Chris Porter’s talk on his theory behind the Geometron – and built something similar to try it out! I like the concept of being able to prototype here in the UK – it’ll hugely shorten lead times and increase innovation whilst reducing risk. I guess it also opens up options of custom geometry if it’s financially viable.

It’s called the Longshot and we’re proud we kind of named it :o)
    It’s hinted at here: http://radventure.cc/cotic-soul-searching/

Not as pretty as my Starling.

Which is custom geometry, so can also be slack, long and low. Or not, whatever you want!

I didn`t see that at Bespoke ,was it on the Shand stand ? I only gave that a quick glance as I walked past!

Whats the point of mixing a carbon rear end with a steel front? Aren’t most combos like that a Carbon front with a metallic rear?

Carbon front ends are brought it as they can save a lot of weight, rear ends ususally follow later as they are more complex to make. I guess in this case the purpose was learning how they could make a carbon rear end (the complex bit).

I like that he’s given it a go, sad to see we’re not going to get these actual frames.

If you bother to read the article, or even the thread you’d know it was just an experiment and unlikely to influence production greatly, Cy used Shand and Swarf to be able to quickly build a prototype in the UK to test a few things out, cutting out Taiwan, with the associated cost and time factors.

It looked way better in the flesh. As a tall rider my first reaction was ‘now there’s a bike that’ll fit”

The Shand bikes were easily some of the best finished at the show, the Cotic was no different. A Shand front end would probably swing the decision on purchasing a short travel Rocket!

Some of the custom builders might do well looking at producing a full suspension bike or at least entertaining those of us who want to spaff money on silly ideas.

True. I also see prototyping in the UK as a perfect (common sense) idea. If I were Cy I’d have completed my welding courses years ago! 🙂

If you make a carbon rear, the same mould fits every frame size.

It should be a good idea but all the ones I spoke to wanted 2k minimum, we’rent interested or had their own ideas and pushed my ideas in a different direction.

Welding isn’t necessarily the problem, mitring, jigging and aligning are all huge hurdles

I’m a big fan of the looks of the standard Rocket, but that to me looks like a right old gate. And it’s even painted the same colour that gates come in.

That is a rather pointless gate.

Mate you alrle doing it wrong you need a fan biy Base before you can go upsetting the big hitters

I read the email with interest, couldn’t see any details of the geometry used though – aside from a hint of a 63deg HA.

Did anyone ascertain the reach on that prototype?

I do have a fan base, but it’s just small at the moment. It won’t grow without getting exposure. I’m sure Cotic can take it all in it’s stride…

Just pointing out that my bike is prettier than the Cotic!

I thought that. It’s a gate in name only, really.

The promo pics seem to be running an angleset and the bespoke pics mention its been removed so I’d estimate 63 would be about right all in, its already at 65.5 it doesn’t need much to get it to 63.

There are comments about the XL frame being 20mm longer so I suspect this would be a similar length longer but who knows?

I think the Cotic looks rad! Maybe you need to be a steel fan or something, but I likes it. 3 nice traingles in unison.

As it goes, isn’t that gate a 29er that’s had its wheels pinched?

    chiefgrooveguru

The Longshot has to be over 500mm reach, or there’s something wrong with my eyes! Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s closer to 550mm.

    chakaping

It looks super long, but the thin tubing could be visually exaggerating the length.

Got to be more than 20mm longer than the standard Rocket though, the stock large is only 448mm reach.

    chiefgrooveguru

The seat tube looks steeper too.

The photo isn’t perfectly side on but I’ve chucked it into cad and used rim size and crank length to try and estimate some kind of proportion

    63.5 HA
    465 reach
    450 Seat tube
    76.5 Seat Angle
    1225 Wheelbase

To be honest what interests me most is the talk of using 29er rear ends

    ravingdave

that looks a whole load of wrong! I usually like Cotic’s but the proportions look completely off. and I like the whole long, low slack thing!

whats the phrase?: if it looks right, it is right?
