I need to send about 6000 euros to someone, I’ve used the Halifax before but it was quite spendy, who might be cheaper?

    if you use this link
    https://transferwise.com/u/0cc91
you get £3k’s worth transfered for free (so do I)

transferwise wil give you the true mid market price, no slushy margins like at the bank. vg VFM.

And now you are worried about what it costs?

    That ship has sailed.

You’re right, and ironically the payment is for a boat charter!
Thanks for the heads up on transferwise, I’ll look into that.

Look at currencyfair.com as well – I have no link to them other than having used them several times and found them very good – peer to peer with a very low fee; I don’t know how they compare to transferwise.

I’ve used Currency fair loads of times and you can get a market beating rate as its a peer to peer

Transfers are only 3 eur and using the this link the first one is free and you get a free 30EUR

I just used my online banking. £4 fee but the rate wasn’t great compared the claimed rate on Google. Don’t know if you can actually get that rate but I was in a hurry to get it done before Friday.

nick – the “fee” is usually irrelevant, the rate can be eye-wateringly bad.

The likes of transferwise transact at the mid market rate (i.e. they do not take the margin that banks take on the transaction). They just take the v modest fee. Currency conversion margin fees by banks are terrible, and are finally dying thanks to the likes of transfer-wise, but unfortunately most people dont understand the numbers and continue to use their banks.

Yep, would recommend transferwise too. Very quick, easy to use, and was the most cost-effective option when I researched this a while back.

    Thanks sharkbait.
That’ll soften the blow on moving summer holiday money what with the chipped conversion rate at the moment 🙂

I’d recommend Revolut, there’s no fees and it’s at the inter-bank rate.

transferwise for one off’s for sure. For regular frequent transfers, the more traditional transfer houses are ‘easier’ in that they will do the payment automatically on a set frequency.

Stoner, I cheekily used your link last night. Hope that isn’t a problem
