Hi all. Am competing in the Scotland Coast to Coast in a few weeks time from Nairn to Glencoe and am deliberating on kit - mainly tyre choice for my Cube hardtail. I'm carrying Nobby Nics at the moment but feel I can shed some weight and find something a lot faster as around 60% of the riding is on road. Anyone done the race before and can suggest an ideal tyre/combo?
Scotland Coast to Coast Race - tyre choice?
Is this the nokia/rat race event? If so, I've also been pondering the same question. Are you in for the 1 or 2 day? I'm only just starting proper training!!
Yep - the Rat Race event. My first time - am registered for the 1 day - you? Also just starting training after a few months gluttony after the London marathon. Re tyre choice - the kit advice on the website suggests a cyclo cross - so I'm thinking a fairly quick tyre should be possible. Would think rain is a strong possibility though, nothing worse than off road mud with near-slicks on.
Did the 1-day version (with extra kayaking for kicks!) in year 1. We were allowed a choice of bikes, so used a TT for the section from the Castle to the Kayak put-in. Cyclocross the rest of the way. CX was the correct choice. The off-road is almost entirely towpath and forest road, with a short (1-2km?) singletrack section.
I'd even consider a slick. Lots of people seemed to be riding sturdy-ish road bikes and were doing OK for almost all of the course.
By the way..... brace yourself for the final run. Just when you're expecting it to descend from the WHW to Loch Leven, it doesn't. Another 1000' climb and then a greasy muddy descent.
Paul McG thanks very much for your post. Will keep a mental note about the kick at the end! Advice on tyres is appreciated. Sounds like I may look out of place with my hardtail! Will look at something close to a slick - maybe Continental Travel Contact...
thanks headsup - much appreciated
I have an extra double room booked in Carrbridge for the Friday night (£47). Im looking to get my car over to Ballachulish on Friday afternoon, then a lift back to the east coast. Iam staying over in Ballachulish after the race and can take you back to the east coast to collect your car if needed.
Can anyone help? Can give the room for free if we can come to an arrangement with transport...
Both my helpers have pulled out though ill health and work commitments
Have you looked at the race bus that leaves glencoe at midday on Friday? That's what me and my mates are doing, get to glencoe fri a.m. Leave car, take party bus with camping gear and bikes to the east coast whilst dropping off bikes at first transition point en route.
Kenda Small Block 8's?
its looking likely that I will have to do this I think...had hoped to save a few quid by getting transport off someone seeing as Ive now had to pay for hotels at the start and the finsh of the race nightmare!
NOt gonna let it spoil the fun though!!
Let me know if you hear of anyone looking for digs near the start please BTW Do you have anyone going between Nairn and Ballachulish?
No probs will keep an eye out for anyone looking for digs at the start line. Me and mates are all taking part, no support crew at start, finish or anywhere in between!!
Starting to look forward to it....
mcwyc there will be people cheering you round for sure
Im getting excited about this too! Gonna be great!
How is your training going? What category you in?
Racing Ralphs, roll quickly, grip ok and are light.
