The occupants of the car managed to escape from the vehicle before it was hit at Cleghorn level crossing in Lanark on Saturday evening.

Yes, yes, but have they been permanently sterilised for the sake of the species ?

Last time I drove past there a BTP van was parked in the layby videoing the traffic going through. I take it there is a problem with some drivers cutting it fine with the red lights.

Every level crossing has problems with drivers cutting it fine, yellow light and alarm means ‘speed up’ apparently and most won’t stop on red, only when barriers start lowering. People queuing across the crossings is an everyday problem too.

I’ve used that LC a lot. There are express trains coming through it so the lights are often at red for a long time. Plus, it’s a very busy line. You can sit for ages, see a train go past and then sit for ages again…..

and then another train comes through.

It wouldn’t surprise me if someone had tried to get through the barriers, though if they were all working that would be exceedingly difficult.

thats why network rail are trying to get rid of barrier crossings and put bridges in their place, and locally a foot crossing was going to be replaced with a bridge with just steps at a cost of £800,000 pounds, got thrown out as not suitable for disabled or horses/cyclists, and about 5 people have been killed on the crossing

There’s so many here in The Fens as everything outside of the towns is at or below sea level. Far too expensive to build bridges for every crossing. I can cross 8 different ones in a 40 mile ride. Network Rail has been closing some of the ones on footpaths on bridleways due to safety concerns, I doubt that’s legal.
