Hi all
Need to replace the frame bearings as started to get some play. Bearings not an issue as I can get nearly any type of bearing from work but question is can this be done at home or is this a specialist job to do?
Any advice appreciated as never had to do it as yet

I’ve just done my Marin ones and I can’t see it being much different. Easy job ,you may need to make a press though.

I bodged a removal tool from some tube, cut slots in and splayed out the ends. Like a smaller version of a headset removal tool. If the bearings collapse and you are left with just the outer race stuck in then you will need a proper blind bearing puller as they sit in ‘blind’ holes in the downtube. Btw the collet pivot bolt/axle that holds it all together is really neat.

Its getting them out that’s the issue. An easy job if you have the removal tool or you could try making one as julianwilson describes.

Popping them back in is not an issue, just use a socket that’s about the right size and tap them home.

I could push my bearings out with a 12 mm socket and a threaded bar.
Had a great big socket the other side to push it into.

Check the bearings when you get them out, as some Superlight’s have bearings with a built in shoulder on the inner race, so you might struggle matching them up from a ‘normal’ bearing supplier.

I did mine at home years ago so it must be easy enough with hammer and sockets. I remember the official ‘pack’ from SC being pretty cheap and included everything which could wear including axle for about £20? Might be worth looking at instead of putting fresh bearings on a worn axle.
Probably depends on which version you have, mine is an ’03 and I think the later ones are a better design (although mine is still only on it’s second set of bearings and still no play!).
