if you have to add preload you’ve got the wrong spring

So, the preload has to be adjusted or not?.

They’re both kind of right – but then you’d think the manufacturer had a manual that explained it all wouldn’t you ?

All adding preload does is adjust ride hight and make small bump worse. The shock will still perform the same after it gets past the preload force. A small amount just to hold the spring in place is what you want. If you are using 1 or more turns of the adjuster then your spring weight is too light.
