After the run v cycle calories thread i was just wondering if anyone was doing London or Edinburgh to name two.
Just getting in to my long runs and i am following the 3 day a week running programme as i commute by bike.
I swapped my tuesday cycle with a run to work and bus home to get more runs in.
I feel more like a runner than a cyclist at the moment but i just cant get on with runnersworld forum so i hang around here mostly lurking and getting excited about the few running threads that appear.
So what are you planning? and how is it going?
For me its Edinburgh and my last long run will be at the 3 peaks fell race.

I'm doing Edinburgh but taken a week off as I threw myself into training a bit too quickly. Pain in the groin / abductors. Will go out for an easy run tomorrow and see how I get on.
Was up to 25 miles a week - 3 x 4 miles and a 13 miler on the weekend, and 4 mile round trip cycle commute everyday.

Booked up to do the Dublin one in October. My first.
I am a non runner.
Started, then got a chest infection (again!) and backed off for last week.
Back on it asap.

I'm doing Edinburgh, just starting my 16 week plan to take me up to the big day.
I'm running 4/5 times a week, but only 2 harder sessions and a long run on Sundays (75 mins this week).
I thought I'd hate the training but it's got me hooked at the minute.
Good luck to everyone else who's training.

not doing a proper one but fancy doing the Great South Run in Portsmouth. Been trying to get out running in preperation but it hurts all the muscles I don't use cycling!!

Got a speed session tomorrow night then a local 10k on sunday.
Good to see some Edingburgh runners on here. Let me know how its going? fingers crossed we will get to the start line.
[and then the finish line]
Always fancied Dublin so maybe next year.Posted 2 years ago # -
I am doing the Midsummer Munro (half marathon with 3000ft of climbing around boxhill!!) in June and then The Greensand Marathon in october around Leith Hill which has 5,700ft of climbing!! Yes I am probably mad but only plan to do one marathon in my life and thought it might as well be a tough one....

I'm doing Brighton in April. I'm a bit behind schedule on the training but I'm hoping this morning's 11 miler will help me catch up.

Greensand Marathon in october around Leith Hill
Nice one! its good to see so much interest in Marathons that arent the "London" too much focus on that over the years, the result being many smaller marathons have gone to the wall.

http://www.trionium.com/greensand/I had no idea there was anything like that around these parts. That's my usual stomping ground for running and biking anyway. Some of those climbs are absolute ba5tards on foot. I might well practice a lap or two to see how those particular routes feel.
Good luck!

I did London last year and hated it, far too noisy the only peace i got was in the under passes. Dont think i will ever go again unless i really am flying and go for a good time on the 1 course that matters to joe public. I was having a bad day though at London and the constant 'youre doing well' cheers Didint help. I wasnt doing well. I was rubbish and knew it!!
Doing Edinburgh because its fast and hope to get a good pb.
I can reccomend Snowdonia and the yorkshireman marathon and i think the 3 peaks will become my new obsession as i love the cyclocross event to. Something about the area that i just love.
Hope to do Snowdonia again this year, Superb event. i might even run it well this year.Posted 2 years ago # -
My wife's doing the Brighton marathon in April.
For someone who's previously poo-pooed any spending I've made on bike technology she's wholheartedly thrown herself into getting posh running kit and shoes plus a Garmin forerunner 305. I feel a thaw in restrictions on bike spendign might be on the way...

Brighton's going to be my only road marathon this year
Only just got the space off of a mate who's injured, so need to structure my running training asap
I've got a fair base though to work onAnother -1 for London
Did it for the first time last year, never again (unless I get a good for age start) way to busy, soooo many people in the wrong start sectors
I felt like I was constantly dodging people until about half way, drove me nuts!Doing the 3 Peaks Yacht Race again this year, hoping for a better finish this year,
boat/weather/tide issues were really against us last year, won the third leg though wich was a real bonus
probably fit in an ultra/MM or two at some point too
not really planned event for this year yetPosted 2 years ago # -
I'm doing the White Peak trail marathon in May, and also the Grindleford Gallop 22 miler in March. At least i'm supposed to be, of all the things to get injured my big toe is buggered!
Oh and for what it's worth I did London a couple of years ago and loved it. Thought it was fantastically organised and though i was under the assumption it would take ages to get going, i crossed the line and started running ~9 seconds after the elites departed.

I'm hoping to run a half.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Have a bash at Snowdonia in Nov. Done it a few times and got to say it's an ace course. If you cope with three peaks, you'll fly around.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'll second the Yorkshireman. Great event in fine terrain. I'd much rather do an event with 300 smelly grumpy fell runners than 30,000 middle managers in London. Three Peaks for me this year. That'll be easy, it's shorter and I won't have to carry a bike.

I felt like I was constantly dodging people until about half way, drove me nuts!+1 I did it once and was passing people with "sub 5hrs or bust" on there vests even though I had gone through the opening mile in under 6 mins! So many joggers in the sub 2:45 - 3 hr section.
Daisy, Glad to see you are planning races after your layoff!

I'm doing Edinburgh and got my 16-week training email last night. I commute out to South Queensferry by bike most days, but will drop one of those each week and run both ways instead (5-6 miles each way), and then a long run on the weekend. Hope that'lll be enough.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hey Surfer, just been shamed in entering Three Peaks Race myself. Why not give it a go? Come on it'll be fun!
Posted 2 years ago # -
training for the tavistock half marathon in april. did an 8.5 mile run on sunday which felt ok so distance isnt gonna be a problem. trying to work on speed now and get in under 2 hours, maybe under 1:45.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Are there any places left on the 3 peaks? I heard last week there were only 9 left!
Let me know if you get in. I have done snowdon twice already and need another 2 coasters to make a set! So i will be there again i am sure, although not entered it yet.
Stever- less of the grumpy! But i agree with the rest. See you at the peaks maybe.Posted 2 years ago # -
Daisy do I need to navigate or can I just sit behind you ?

do halves count? - i'm in the sheffield half.
i've not been running seriously for about a year, as i'm struggling with a recurring foot injury - which i can avoid if i run in a barefoot style, but by crikey it's hardwork on the calf muscles!
aiming for a 1:40.

Half marathons definitely count.
I love the half marathon distance, it's a proper run but without being so long that you'll do yourself a mischief if you blow up or pace it wrong.
I am doing the Bristol Half again this year (but taking sun-block).

Doing London for the first time. Always been put off by idea of so many folk and dodging around folk. Sounds like it is going to live up to everything I did not want
Ah well

I'm planning on running the Sheffield Half again this year. Clocked 1:58 last year, so looking to scrape some time off it. Have a 10k race this Sunday in Llandudno as well.
Waiting to see if I get in the place in the Great North run main ballot (didn't get in via the Mirror ballot).

If anyone in Edinburgh is looking to join some friendly structured training sessions, Edinburgh AC have sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday (ladies only), Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, mainly at the Meadows.
We've got people training for London and Edinburgh marathons, as well as a host of other triathlons/duathlons/MMs/hill runs/adventure races throughout the year. More on our site, or else drop me a message.

I'm doing the Mont Blanc marathon in June, so lots of hill training for me over the next few months!
The bikings going to take a bit of a backseat for now.Posted 2 years ago # -
Surfer, we'll jog around together if you wana. But it's a very runable course, so you'll cruze it. Get your entry in. What have got to lose?
Posted 2 years ago # -
OK Daisy I've done the deed!!!

Done London last year, ran it with the wife. We're just going for a half at the moment (Reading) and then maybe something a little different like the Hell Down South Run

I'm running the Rotterdam marathon in April (I live in Holland). Currently on week 7 of 16 and did a 20 mile run last Saturday and 34 miles a week.
I'm going to also do a 30km road race in two weeks and two 32km trail races in Belgium with a 3 week taper.
Last year I did 3 sessions a week and got round okay but I'm sure that 4 runs a week make it easier overall. I'm using the training plan calculator from the home page of runnersworld.com. I'm also doing yoga to help stretch. Cycling is taking a back seat at the moment but the weather and amount of ice here is making it no fun. The age my kids are at I just don't get out on the bike as much as I'd like and I'm enjoying my running more and more as I build a better base.
@nosemineb, may I ask what your marathon PB is? I fancied doing the 3 peaks run as I've done the cyclocross version 3 times now. I'd didn't dare enter due to the requirements for a 'previous history'. I'd be interested to hear how you get on, would you post afterwards to let me know?
Good luck to every one who plugging on through the training and half marathons definatly count. More speed but still a challenge to do well.

English bob, I emailed the organiser of the peaks before the entries came out as at the time i had only done 1 'am' cat fell race and they like you to have done 2. I told them my history of running and that i had done cyclocross race 4 times twice in 1st class times etc and he said just enter there wont be a problem. My current marathon pb was london last year in 3.26 but it just didnt go to plan from mile 1. I have done Snowdon in 3.40.
Ive done quite a few fell races but different cats or they have been bofra so dont count towards the FRA classification. i am guessing there are some places left so maybe just enter and see if you get refused.
Ben nevis refused me tho but after the peaks i will have done the quallifying races so hope to do that next year.Posted 2 years ago # -
Daisy and surfer i take it you have run the peaks before? How was it, and what times did you manage?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yep, doing London for my 1st marathon this year.
Have run man v horse before, but never the full distance on tarmac.
Up to running 13-14 miles at a weekend & trying to get some speed work in during the week, or turbo sessions as I'm also doing the Clumber Classic duathlon next monthPosted 2 years ago # -
Doing the Grisley in March, about 20miles offroad and as hard as they can make it. So lots of hill reps and a long run at the weekend. Doing 45-50 miles a week at the mo. Still think im going to struggle as iv done it once before and was lighter and fitter then !

not meaning to highjack the thread but with a number of runners replying here...
I've had a bit of a strained calf muscle (soleus) recently so have been off running for 3/4 weeks and having physio treatment once a week which seems to be working. Went for a 20min jog round the park last w/end and all was well so then went out for half an hour Tues morning with a bit of a quicker pace at times and it all felt good but this afternoon the physio seemed to think I'd overdone it bit and told me to back off again. So the next run will have to wait a few days and back to a jog round the park.
What's the best way to back into it to prevent reoccuring injury and once back up to my usual 10k what's the best way to increase the distance to half marathon ?

Well I wouldn't pretend to know more than a trained physio but I use ice packs wrapped around the muscle when I have a 'tweak'. I don't stretch before running, I start by walking the first 1/4 mile and the jog, trot and then run. I stretch only afterwards when the muscles are warm.
I've found yoga to be beneficial.
Going from 10k to half marathon, extend your long run by 10% each week and after three weeks back off 20%, then repeat. So from 10k, to 11, 12, 13, then back to 11, then 12, 13 14 etc. Once your're at 16 to 17k you should be able to run a 1/2. But recovery will be easier if you can build the long runs up.
Try to manage 3 sessions per week, half your total weekly milage on the weekend and spread the other half over the other 2 sessions. I would lay off intervals and tempo runs until the injury passes.
But I am not a qualified physio so take my advice with a pinch of salt. Most importantly, listen to your body at all times and don't be a slave to your HRM.

Sat in my dentist to-day,an picked up(before the torture began) a triathalon mag.Story kicks of about some elderly gent(70!)doing a thing called the Deca marathon(not sure thats the name, but you get the idea). Now I never heard bout such a thing an reads on.Statistics are thus - 25 mile(yes mile's)swim,1200 mile cycle and 250 mile run/walk/crawl/die(maybe?).You have 2 weeks in which to complete, and apparently the old boy came 5th.So next time you saddle up/shoe up,remember marathons and iron mans are for pussies - the decathon is for real men/women.
