I have just purchased a chain, cassette and rings for my bike as its about had it. One of the lads in the club says he puts on a fresh chain every 2000 miles which negates the need to buy a new cassette and rings. Is this true or witch craft.?

When my chain checker tells me to.

2000 miles probably isn’t far off if ridden in decent conditions. My summer bike can get up to 4000km from a chain, my winter bike a lot less.

I do keep my chains pretty clean though as well.

Careful cleaning, regular but accurate lubrication and tempered gear shifting make a big difference to chain and overall drivetrain life

Be aware that using aggressive cleaning products, overlubing the chain and skipping cleaning (allowing build up of gunge) and forcing bad shifts will accelerate damage to the chain and other drivetrain components
