  • Roady Wheel help required – New Wheel / Wheels or rebuild?

    Hi All,

My specialized Allez rear wheel is giving me problems – many broken spokes (usually the end of the elbow is shearing off). I have replaced a few spokes but they keep going!

I guess it is at the end of its useful life?

    So do I

a, Buy some new spokes and rebuild (never done this before)
b, Buy some new spokes and rim and rebuild
c, Get someone who knows what they’re doing to rebuild as above
d, Buy a ready made wheelset from One one / Merlin etc.

Thanks in advance for your input, helpful or indeed otherwise!

Cant tell what the wheelset is but I’d guess it’s a heavy one. I say treat yourself to an upgrade.

The original wheels are Alexis rims (500) i think and Specialised hubs.

I have changed the ball bearings in the hubs and regreased once.

The bike was about 400 originally so I dont think the Dales Rider option is really going to happen (besides they are out of stock 😀

not the lightest, certainly not the pimp-est, but they will do the job.

I bought a pair of these for my winter bike. They seem pretty good so far.

If the hub/rim are in good shape and you CBA with the effort then a rebuild is the best value.

If not probably an ideal time to upgrade.

Get your local roadie shop to build you some up, they’ll probably last you forever and you’ll be able to get them repaired cheap and quick if need be
