  • Road long cage rear mechs – why only 27t largest sprocket?

Why are shimano long cage rear mechs only have a max sprocket of 27t rather than a mtb rear mech of 34t?

Would like a long cage ultegra rear mech with mtb 32t cassette for touring.

    What’s different with the mech?

Something to do with the parallelogram of the mechs. Run a road mech with a too big sprocket and the top jockey wheel clashes so will not shift properly.

What would be the issue with running an XT mech or similar for the purposes of touring?

The linkage geometry is different on an MTB mech. The cage has to swing lower to accommodate a 34T sprocket.

No problem at all running an XT mech or mtb mech. Just I have a full ultegra groupset, so wanted to keep it all the same.

Thought it might be the linkage…..shame
