I am going on holiday and would like to take a few of my DVDs to watch on the plane: Is there any good, free software that will do the job?

I use Handbrake as it’s free, easy to use and does the job
(admittedly I use it for an ipad but it has android ‘presets’)

    More options here

Not sure on free, but I use DVD Catalyst. Cheap, and very good value for money so far.

I still use DVD shrink and it works fine for me. You can also download the film if you own a copy anyway.

Are you sure about that? Can i steal a blu-ray if i own the DVD?

Yeah, it does sound rather dubious, I have to say.

No you can download a dvd copy.
Downloading no different from ripping the copy.
    Hence copy protection.

    Update!!

I ended up downloading some free software called Freemake, and so far it seems to work very well indeed. It actually seems to have less bother with the protection than most others I tried earlier.

Handbrake, with the wee DLL tweak to get past copy protection, works a charm.

I’ve used Freemake to rip War of the Worlds (original), The Day the Earth Caught Fire, and Inglorious Basterds and they all look great.

You can but still not legal.

FWIW I would download as it’s normally quicker unless you have torrent watch going on.
