Did you know how fascinating the Brazil Nut Tree is? Can't be grown in plantations because it requires a particular type of bee to pollinate it, and this bee will only be in the area if there's a certain type of orchid growing epiphytically on a near by tree. Apparently boy bees like the orchid, and the lady bees are attracted by the boy bees and pollinate the brazil nut flowers.

Due to the complex pollination requirements, brazil nuts can't be cultivated in a plantation - they're collected from the wild. And contrary to the name, most of them come from Bolivia, not Brazil.

The 'nuts' are contained in hard spherical pods. These pods can only be opened by certain animals, such as agoutis, macaws and capuchin monkeys (who use tools to smash them open). Oh, and humans.

Now, who wants to hear about the three toed sloth?

The three toed sloth stays in the trees, normally feasting on the Yarumo tree (of the cecropia family). It leaves its position of relative safety once a week, to descend to the forest floor to defecate. There's no real reason for it to do this - it's time consuming, and puts it at risk from jaguars. There's a theory that perhaps it realises that its manure fertilises its tree, and makes it more bountiful as a result.

In the trees, the sloth's main predator is the harpy eagle, which has awesome feathers on its head. Seriously, google it.

The sloth is normally a strange shade of green. This is because the air is so humid and the sloths are so slow moving that algae grows in its fur. Moths live in its fur, feeding on the algae, and, when the sloth goes to the toilet, will hop off and lay its eggs in its poo. The eggs hatch, the larvae eat the poo, then when they mature into moths they fly back up to find their own sloth to start the cycle again.

A dead sloth can hang in the tree for a couple of days before falling.

I reckon the Sloths who live lower down the tree make it climb down.
