Hello, I’ve been diagnosed with a Inguinal Hernia and am waiting to be referred to a specialist.

I’ve had a good long chat with my GP about continuing riding with the hernia and he doesn’t see a problem as long as I stop the single speeding as this will put stress on it. I currently commute most days, maybe an evening MTB ride then a 2 to 3 hour MTB ride at the weekend, so averaging between 10 to 12 hours a week at this time of year.

I would appreciate people’s opinions/experiences who have had this condition plus what sort of treatment did you go for and how successful it was?

I also have a torn Abductor muscle and have been told it can take up to 4 months to completely heal. Again anyone’s experiences of this would be welcome.

I suspect that inguinal hernias cover a multitude of symptons. I have just had mine fixed, but I rode with it for at least 5 years and it never caused any pain whilst cycling. I do about 8000 miles a year on the bike so if cycling was going to cause a problem, I would have known about it. It ended up being about 70mm diameter (not quite half a tennis ball size). Now have a 75mm scar, no hernia and a mesh holding it all in. 4 weeks post op – back on the bike (gently), 6 weeks post op, starting to extend the riding and effort. Consultant says 3 months post op, back to normal. But that’s my experience. Yours may be completely different.

However, I have heard stories about lots of pain (pre-op and post-op) and I guess it all depends on which bit of the muscle is damaged as to how much it will affect your riding. I guess it’s one of those “if it hurts, don’t do it” type bits of advice.

Thanks for that. I suspect I may have had this for some time and it was only the fact that I’ve torn my Abductor muscle and went to the Docs that it was discovered. As with you it doesn’t hurt at all.

I got some kinda of aductor muscle issue from playing footy. I didnt have a proper hernia but I was diagnosed with gilmores groin although I’m not really sure.

Anyway I developed tendenitis of the abductor, Im not sure wether it was because I kept going or just because the way I’d developed meant I put alot of strain on it.

Anyhow took about 2 years to clear up and at point would just go with only minor twinges. So be careful with it dont overstrain.

During this time I couldnt really do exercise properly.

Since it cleared up its been 100% though.

I reckon I might have had saciolliac joint dysfunction myself.

Anyhow you need to be sure your core is strong. If you have both a hernia and a pulled abductor your likely to have core strength/balance/gait/sacroilliac issues which are causing the other issues.

I must be an interesting case as my Doctor email’d a NHS Physio for advice on treatment. The Physio rang me just now and said she could fit me in at 11am tomorrow.

Never let it be said that the NHS is slow! 😉
