Charlie Kelly posted this on retrobike

A friend from BITD sent me these links to video he shot in Crested Butte in 1980. I'm all over it, wearing the yellow t-shirt, but the best shot is Scot Nicol riding no-hands while juggling.

Keep in mind that in 1980 no one had any idea this mountain bike thing would get so crazy.

That's a long way from Fife McMoonter. Fantastic piece of history 😉

Brings me back to whem the first americans came to Aberdeen in the late 70's/early 80's and a couple of their kids had clunkers with coaster brakes. We used to race them round the woods at the back of my folks house. Happy days 😆

Woody – do I know you?

I rode around Mt Tam with Charlie Kelly a couple of years ago, it was like time had stood still……man!

No trip to Fairfax is complete without a ride with these guys.

Not unless you're originally from Aberdeen/Cults way and I'm in Durham now. I got Fife from your profile as I thought you had to be American! Nearest I've been to Mt Tam is a ride round Cape Cod 😕

Woody, back in the mid 80's we rode with a bunch of guys from Aboyne, there were a group of other riders from Aberdeen who used to join us.

Wide bars, slack angles, big tyres… It'll never catch on.

I'm glad those awkward-looking gears didn't catch on though.

McMoonter – not me I'm afraid, only really started cycling/mtb in early '90's.

Scotia – yes but probably older than you. Left Cults Academy in 1976. You from there too?

Great vids , makes me feel the fun and the freedom of mountain biking today has somehow been lost though.

I like to think that in our own very small way our group rides capture the fun that oozed through those clips .Hell at one point i swear i heard Aleigh or Annabana screaming !
Some of the fun seems to have been lost in certain areas along the way though .
Just remember don't take it too serious it's only goofing about in the woods !A quote from a certain Mr Fisher if i recall correctly .In fact wasn't that him on the film with the 'tache ?

It's getting away from the cops, the cars, the concrete and getting out there

Control? If everything was under control it wouldn't be any fun!

Some quality quotes in there 8)

I think you may be right re lost fun. Looking at the vid reminded me that I used to go just go out and ride my bike without too much thought. Now it's all the gear (no idea in my case) spd's, 3/4 baggies etc.etc. All seems a bit like you have to ride with a purpose instead of JRA. Mind you, some of those jeans in the vids looked seriously nutcrackingly tight 😯

Woody yeah a lot has gotten all corporate, bike design wise now i think .Probably why people go for singlespeeds maybe ?Simplify things a bit .I've actually got a Kona Aha with twin top tubes based on the Klunkerz .Don't ride that enough neither .
I always said the day i start taking it serious would be the day i give up and i still believe that .

Not one of Orkney's proudest moments.

Thats not to say abuse is unknown among inbred Islanders
