Argh it is so annoying!!! Anyone else suffer from this??

I tend to go through spates where I get it on and off for weeks on end, then the episodes will disappear as quickly as they start. Having a bad time of it at the moment, but can’t ever seem to find a trigger.

Has anyone else ever found a cause for it? And how do I get it to stop! Tried walking around, a good massage, raised legs, lowered legs, nothing really seems to give much relief until it decides to stop of its own accord

I’m just living in hope that all this moving will at least lead to a toned set of pins 🙂

its awful you just learn to live with it, a friend of mine thought his car had a misfire but no it was my “musical leg”.
it improved a lot when i stopped smoking.

Stop caffeine after midday (or altogether)
Regular exercise (but not late evening or at night)
    Stress can be a trigger
A good routine at night (sleep hygiene) so avoid iPhones/computers/TV’s an hour before going to bed. Reduce alcohol. Ensure evening meal is eaten early evening not late on.
GP can prescribe medication, but only really useful if its happening all the time.

    Hope that’s some help 🙂

Tiredness & stress are my triggers.

Crawling / tingling feeling from feet to thighs and leg spasms.

    From experience:

    Red wine is a trigger.
    Increasing iron (through diet) helps.
    Managing stress helps.

manage stress, regular exercise.. dehydration was a trigger for me, so a glass of water before bed used to really help..

I had it really badly for some years, but have only had it on a couple of brief occasions since the kids were born.. from that we can deduce that complete and utter mental and physical exhaustion seem to solve the problem almost completely 😀

It’s a symptom of anaemia btw. Depending on your gender it’s extremely common.

Here you are, a song all about it (Half man half Biscuit)

    Restless Legs
Here she lies in her fleecy gown
By my side in the eiderdown
But she can’t get a ticket to Morningtown
    ‘Cos I’ve got restless legs
Boring though this film may be
    Slumber still won’t visit thee
So long as you stay next to me
    For I have restless legs
    Milky drink and Sudafed
“That should sort you out”, she said
As I kicked myself clean out of the bed
    Grazed my restless legs
    Homeopathic cures I’ve sought
All in all they’ve come to naught
I wish it was some astronaut
    Who had these restless legs
Four o-six and I’m wide awake
Got an uncontrollable urge to take
A five mile hike around the Ogwen Lake
    Stretch these restless legs
    No sympathy from Uncle Greg
    Nor indeed from Aunty Meg
Well thank God I’m not Jake the Peg
    With an extra restless leg
So come the day when I don’t exist
And worms are flying through the graveyard mist
    Don’t go bothering the exorcist
    It’s just my restless legs
    It’s just my restless legs
    It’s just my restless legs

Is it actually twitching or an inability to sit comfortably – if the latter I have had if for a while and find bed and sleep are the only answer so fatigue and stress sounds spot on.

I’m also a sufferer, seems to be worse if I don’t exercise for a while, but more noticeable sitting on the sofa, in bed less so.

I tried multi vitamins with iron and it cured it in a couple of days. Also suffered from achy hips in bed and that went away as well.

    I get it bad.

Drinking tonic water because of th e quinine is meant to help some, never did me though.

I put my legs on one of those electric foot massagers, that helps mine.

100% definitely dehydration with me, big glass of water and some squats usually sort it.
I also apparently twitch a lot after watching MotoGP.

It used to absolutely ruin me, I used to sit on an exercise bike for an hour at night, Id do anything to stop it. Now I’m older an analytical approach has revealed tiredness as the main trigger for me. If I’m tired and inactive that day it kicks in with a vengeance.

    Simple cure: magnesium supplement. Easy.

I had that for ages and always worse after exercise or bein sat down too long. Turned out it was because my ferritin levels were almost 0! While I didn’t know I was very anaemic I used to drink tonic water and take a magnesium supplement as suggested when I asked on here and the tonic water helped a bit iron helped more though…

    ha.. well whaddya know!
I only recently discovered that I had been very anaemic on and off for some years due to ulcerative colitis.. thinking back, when I was feeling really rough coincided with the worst years of restless legs..

you learn something every day on STW

It’s a dehydration thing for me too – I now always drink a pint of water before bed.

Sometimes having my legs out of the duvet (so they’re cooler) helps too.

4 weeks in taking 400mg a day hasn’t made any difference for me unfortunately.

My mother suffers from it. She swears by Calcium supplements and claims that her symptoms have dramatically improved since taking them.

OH suffers from it. She was prescribed Mirapexin – it’s used in higher doses to treat Parkinson’s – and that seems to have fixed it for her. If she misses a dose it’s like sleeping next to someone who is intermittently plugged into the mains.

Asian food seems to set mine off – which is a bit of a problem seeing as my wife (and chef du maison) is Chinese! Think its something to do with all the MSG but can’t be sure…

It’s the wife that really suffers.
I can be asleep with it & she says it looks like I am playing football.

I ended up being sent to a specialist who prescribed the same drugs as for parkinsons.

No way was I doing that so I went DIY.

As said stress & caffeine are significant factors so I gave up both.

I find wearing shorts (all year round) helps.
If I do get it in bed (which is rarely now) I pop down have a small bowel of cereal & that appears to sort it.

Sticking your legs out of the bed in to fresh cooler air might also help.

Jiggling legs is not the same thing as restless legs.

It’s a sort of pain and anxious need to move about, like to run or do something. It’s very unpleasant, definitely not like leg jiggling. Usually when you are in bed trying to sleep.

bowel bowl – please accept my apologies.

I would describe it as the feeling I get when I have worms crawling up my veins, & that appears to happen all too often.

Anaemia – very interesting. My missus suffers a lot with restless legs and was diagnosed anaemic while pregnant, I shall let her know. Nice one Molgrips, you do indeed learn something every day on STW. Sometimes that something is even useful!

Yep. When we found out Mrs Grips was anaemic, we were able to match up a load of her previous health issues to it, and retrospectively work out the progression of the condition.

Aching leg muscles for no apparent reason is another.

Iron deficiency – That may be the answer to my conundrum!

I was diagnosed with close to zero iron levels and significant anaemia a couple of years back, been taking iron supplements daily ever since. Probably time to get my levels checked again…

    Cheers guys!

I’m not familiar with the track so I’ve no idea whether I’m anywhere near, but reading it, it scans perfectly to the tune of The Ace of Spades.
