The snobbery around kit is a weird thing – people playing 5-a-side in the park aren’t bothered if they wear their Man Utd kit, are they? No one is going to mistake them for <Googles the name of a Man Utd player> Wayne Rooney! If I’m on a ride with a few other people, all in mixed kit, riding (slowly) around the peaks, it’s pretty obvious I’m not in a pro team, regardless of what I wear. That being said, it just feels wrong to me and I’d feel very uncomfortable riding in full pro kit. The more I think about it, the more I want a Tinkoff-Saxo jersey though, they just look cool.

I just stick to plain jerseys, my favourite is a Mavic one because it’s got deep pockets so my pump can’t fall out.

    Wear what you like.
    🙂

I like those Mapei tops – their tile adhesive is excellent.

I found all the team names very exotic as a kid.
Childishly excited to find we were using some Quick Step underlay recently.

Not one for replica shirts and get the whole rainbow thing.

    However…

I really fancy a Singular Jersey…lovely top that, love the retro look about it…but end of the day, I don’t race for Singular so my inner self will not hit buy! Quite annoying really…roadie mates playing with my thinking 👿

maybe I’ll buy one next week.. 😕

Yellow Fluo – Neri Sottoli 2014 jersey . Would love that but cheapest (only) place is £65

If you’re going to get a Saxo kit, get the one with the “crotch eagle”. A perplexed bird of prey looking out of the waist of your shorts, awful design

Look for Vini Fantini, their name last year. After the doping in the giro I bet they’re cheaper

I understand the whole ‘respect the yellow/ rainbow jersey’ sentiment, if you’re a pro or if you’re in a race.
but for the casual rider, wearing one is a surely a mark of respect for the achievement? and the dream of winning one? that’s why I’d wear one – I really like the GB National Champs jersey.
I can’t help but think that this is just another viral cycling doctrine that people just go along with.

I always thought it to be like wearing your favourite team’s football shirt to have a kick about in. Or heavens be, just wearing one normally!

Analagy for rugby doesn’t work so well as I suspect less spectators play

Lance Armstrong has SEVEN of them and hasn’t earnt any of them. In fact hes entitled to wear one just as much as me. We are both tied on TDF victories 🙂 The difference is he has 7 of the shirts and displays them fraudulently.

I like a retro team top, 80’s vintage at the moment, none current mind, bit blasé.

I now want a Mapei one like this…

With plenty to spare. Hence Hora posting bollox here too.

I think Hora should be sent a MJ from the UCI.

I’ve a long sleeved Sky top I wear on the Mountain Bike, I won’t wear it on the Road bike as I think it looks silly riding a Triban 3 with a Sky top on wereas on the Mountain bike, I could have a Dogma at home as far as anyone knows 😉

It was half price and the cheapest jersey I could find at the time.

I’ve never been one for trying to look something you are not, like back in the 90’s when people put a set of alloys on a Escort then stuck a RS turbo badge on it.

Think the problem with the Sky kit is Sky’s popularity, most new cyclists have only heard of them and no other teams so its a bit common.

If I was going to wear team kit on the road I’d probably go for Quickstep or Orica Greenedge just to be a bit different.

nothing sacred about a few “rainbow stripes”

the weight of opinion in this thread seems to be against you, but its all personal choice.

I can’t help but think that this is just another viral cycling doctrine that people just go along with.

I was perfectly capable of coming to this opnion on my own (never been part of a formal club so never been indoctrinated), interesting to see how prevalent it is from this thread. The fact people are in agreement doesnt mean theyre sheep.

The modern ones are just about logos surely? The pros don’t want to wear them! They’re contractually obliged to.

So the old ones didnt have corporate brands on them?

I happen to like the FDJ colour scheme and logo, the fact the logo represents a brand of lottery is irrelevant to me. If it was just some random design I’d still like it.

Only world champs can wear rainbow strips, only race winners can wear race winners jerseys, and you must live in Yorkshire for at least 25 years before you can wear a Yorkshire shirt –

I wouldn’t buy a current team kit, but very tempted to get a La Vie Claire top

I have both mid-90s Mapei and Lemond/Hinault La Vie Claire jerseys. They aren’t for wearing though, they’re hung up in the garage as I like the design on both and they remind me of different eras in cycling.

I was born there, but haven’t lived there for a 25 year period – can I be in included? I wear this jersey.

Wouldn’t wear winners jersey etc, but I’ve just bought myself a Morvélo Chasseur de Cols jersey as a treat. Its yellow (with a black panel front & rear) and it matches my bike, which was why i wanted it 🙂
Branded kit like Morvélo, Castelli, Rapha etc is Posey enough, no need to wear a polka dot jersey.

Similar rules apply to our club. Like cyclists, we like to dress as our heroes too, only we pretend to save the world from total annihilation and not cycle up and down hills. We also have unwritten rules that echo the rules of the cyclist. Here’s a pic from our 2014 AGM.

Please note the White Ranger. He is our leader and has earned the right to wear this outfit. Not just by saving our planet but the entire universe, on many occasions.

We often laugh at ‘pretend’ White Rangers who only wear the costume because it looks the coolest. They haven’t earned the right to wear it but we nearly always remember our training and refrain from karating them into oblivion. Occasionally we issue a chop down were we pick a pretender at random and in a flurry of primary colours, administer a reminder to all who follow. Choose your costume more carefully as who you pretend to be is very important!

I’m sure if you could be bothered to waste your life, you could find posts above to correlate your view, but I’m pretty sure most folk who have posted on this topic have discussed what they would or would not wear, not expressed opinion caring too much one way or the other about the choices of others. Big difference.

What about wearing club kit when you’re not a fully paid-up member? I really look up to some of the semi-pro riders I see out whistling through the countryside in perfectly synchronised groups, but I doubt I’d ever have the fitness or ability or in-depth knowledge of cycling history and culture required to join them. But it would be great, in some way, to be able to show my admiration by wearing the kit. Would people think that odd?

Brailsford rides in Team Sky kit and Tinkoff rides in Saxo-Tinkoff kit. Neither of them are neophytes but neither of them rides for the team.

Team Sky staff are issued with full team riding kit and encouraged to wear it to show support for the team and foster a sense of belonging. That doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

Otherwise I don’t really care what people wear, though KoM polka dot socks, unless you can really, really, climb, seem a little rash tbf.

I’d rather people were out on bikes wearing full world champion regalia/yellow jerseys/KOM tops/Lance replica kit/club jerseys/Strava strip/furry zebra onesies than sat on the sofa stuffing their faces with ice cream and developing obesity-related illnesses.

This morning on my fasted-ride I wore an old Northface tech-tshirt and my ugly face. I don’t care. If someone is bothered they aren’t worth knowing.

I’ll often ride off road in a Swedish footie league shirt (or anything else to hand). Same again, if someone is in the ‘correct kit’ and looks down at me. **** em/him.

He’s the Director.. Paid by British cycling, Sky and associated sponsors.
He’ll also ride in it as its free! Unlike the Canary Wharf banker shelling out the coins.

I have to wear team kit for my job even though I don’t play in the squad. Part of my salary is from sponsors.

I take it you wear Sky Rapha kit then? 😮
