  • Replacing tuner knobs/buttons on an acoustic guitar

Anyone know a good place to buy these from in the UK, and also if they are a standard fit/screw size? I see some listings for some that say they fit ‘Grover’ tuners but I don’t know what tuners I have on my guitar. I have one that has collapsed.

    Any help much appreciated, ta!

I had to do this once. Guitar fell over and snapped off one of the tuning pegs.

They aren’t a standard size. I went to my local music shop, they only had packs of 6 cheapies and they turned out to be much narrower. So I got a piece of dowel, drilled the middle to the right size and then with a craft nice pared the outside to more or less the same diameter and pressed it in place. Looked like crap but worked.

Basically the higher quality and the newer the guitar, the more likely it is to be a simple job. With good hole and height measurements and the right screw spacing it should be fine though it’s still not that easy to get an identical fit (realistically it makes sense to replace the whole set, if it’s a nice guitar. It’s surprising how unsightly even a slightly different colour or shape of tuner is. My brother’s Les Paul has 5 mother of toilet seat tuners and one gold one and it’s horrendous)

But, it can be a bit of an inexact science… It’s a job I wouldn’t feel bad about taking to a shop tbh just to remove any fannying about (the shop I worked in had a stack of random used tuners for cheap fixes and test fits, and quite a lot that had been ordered in error and didn’t fit… Er, including some nice schallers I bought for my own squier, that had the screws in teh wrong place)

Thanks folks – turns out there is a local place in my new office/studio building, I will try them.

Some other people also advised me they are not that standard. I agree might as well buy a new set.

I needed a new set on a cheap acoustic, bought a set of those 3 in a row types I thought would be a straight replacement, they were too short so I had to DIY them a bit and pull out the bits I needed to make a new set

If they are Grovers then I would have thought, just buy grovers

Grovers are good quality tuners.. But they come in different styles. Roto matic, stay-tite.. Standard tuners on a lot of high end guitars.

You’ll more than likely find some to suit.. The trick is if the screw holes are in a different place, try to get a set that will naturally cover up one or both original holes.

A lot of cheaper tuners are basically grover knockoffs so you should be able to get something suitable with better stability and more precise gearing.

You may need to fit a shim in the headstock hole so it’s worth taking a tuner off and measuring your hole.

Not a British site but stew Mac is good site to check out what’s available.

You’ll undoubtedly get more specialist advice on the acoustic guitar forum (AGF) and maybe the unofficial martin guitar forum, in the technical sub forum.

Once you figure out what hardware you want it’s just a matter of mail ordering it online.

Just to add, there are different gear ratios available too..
Basically there are two fairly standard gear ratios, I forget exactly what they are but basically one is ‘slow’ and very precise but can be a pain when fitting a new string as you have to wind it forever (i prefer this type).. The other is fast and more convenient but it’s easy to tune past your target note and go sharp and it’s fiddly for very fine tuning.

I would remove the damaged tuner and measure the diameter of the hole in the neck. You then want to pressure the bit that goes through that hole on the tuner for the pole height.

Have a look at axerus it’s where I get all my bits and bobs for building guitars from.
