  • Replacement chainrings – options?

My Stumpjumper FSR 2009 model (I think) needs a new chain and probably chain rings and casette.

An extensive session of googling leaves me not much the wiser as to what chain rings will fit. The current crankset is OEM XT, 3 ring, 9 speed. Shimano use all sort of letters and numbers. The existing large chainring seems to match the FC M-660, but that is described as SLX.

For a like for like chainring replacement what do I need to look for?

4 bolt 104bcd for the bigger two and 64 for the little one.

Only real difference between the levels is that higher up ones were aluminium alloy to save weight. But lower level steel ones last better.

There will be a number on the crank, somewhere by the pedal which will give you the chainset number.

    Probably these

It’s probably cheaper to buy a whole chainset than individual rings.

As everyone is going 1X I’d put a wanted add up for Chainrings as you might pick up a bargain.

Thanks jonba the number was on the crank FC M-762 which means it is a Shimano “Custom” i.e. OEM only variant on the FC M-760. The outer ring has a slightly different pattern to the XT, more like the SLX. That’s what was confusing me.

Any opinions on SRAM vs Shimano chains. At one time people favoured SRAM even with Shimano hardware.
