We made the mistake of emptying our tent and leaving it all open to dry while we went for breakfast after SITS.

Sadly the wind picked up and when I came back the nylon had torn horizontally just above one of the hem seams that run around the bottom edge of the tent. 😳

(Also while we were away some tw*t pinched our peg bag, spare pegs and hammer, but that’s another story)

So… what’s a good way to fix tent nylon when it is close to the edge seam?

I’ve had a quick look and there is plenty of Tent Repair Tape solutions, but these seem to be aimed at temporary repair and seem better suited to rips on a flat bit, rather than bits where I’d need to fold the tape over around the edge.

Anything more permanent and flexible available?

I suspect you need to look for specialist companies for a truly effective repair. I looked at those specialist tapes when my Endura rain jacket ripped at the back pocket. As a make do I used some (branded) duck tape and it has lasted very well, even passing through the wash a few times. Might be worth doing until you sort a permanent fix.

Get yourself to a chandlers and buy some “sail repair tape.”

Cut to size and stick on. (Make it a few centimetres bigger than the rip in all directions even if it goes over the seam you talk about.)

Grab a sewing machine and zig-zag stitch the repair patch around the edges.

Get some silicon sealant (the clear bathroom stuff) and smear a small amount over the needle holes to make it waterproof.

Job done. (Unless the rip is close to an eyelet/lashing point/tent pole sleeve.) If that is the case then google tent repairs in your local area.

Also, What type of tent is it? Vango have a really good repair service as do all the major brands.

Sewing through the repair tape sounds like a good plan – just need to find someone with a sewing machine I can borrow. Hmmmm…

It is quite close to a peg point, but it’s not in an area that is usually under much tension (unless you stupidly leave the tent fully open in high winds obviously 😳 ).

Can’t remember off-hand what type of tent it is. But it’s a massive six-man, three bedrooms plus living area jobby, so I don’t really fancy paying postage to get it to a repair centre if I can avoid it.
