I have an old set of shimano deore shifters, M511 style. The shifter window is really annoying so i want to remove it, will most likely be done with a hacksaw

Has anyone done this before? tips/advice?

    cheers

With SLX's you can remove it and they come with blanking plates.

Plus move the shifters about 1/4" either way on the brackets.

no backing plates on em, so I got some XT's and the Deores can go on the nippers bike….

I just took it off and then blanked it off with gaffer tape. Looks classy.
