  • Recommend somewhere as nice as York….
  • …for a weekend (sat night) stay, that’s within 80 miles/2hrs of Matlock, Derbyshire.

We occasionally head up to York, stay in the Lamb and Lion, grab some nice food and usually find a backstreet pub with some live music.

Fancy going somewhere in a couple of weeks, but maybe a change of town/city.

    Cheers

Durham or Harrogate. Both interesting with enough to do & plenty of good eateries & good pubs.

York’s a pretty high standard to beat IMO.

    Ludlow is a good call.

Lichfield is a lot nicer than you probably think…

    Just looked & Durham’s 140 miles from Matlock. 😥

    Harrogate is 81.31 miles.

Beverley isnt bad when compared to York. Got its own mini minster. Used to live there for a year, so cant comment on places to stay. Good pub for music is the Sun Inn. Normally free entry. Good pub for a massive range of ale is the Corner House. If you want a proper old old old pub then check out Nellies (White Horse Inn). Its Sam Smiths, but inside is stunning. Super old with roaring fires and gas lights still.
Usual places to eat with two swanky places nearby. Whites slap bang in the middle of the town centre. One michelin star The Pipe and Glass not far away in South Dalton.

Edit. Just checked distance from Matlock and its 80.4 miles haha 😆

Lincoln, is nice, cathedral looks stunning at night all lit.

I’ll be buggered if I’m driving 15 minutes to Eyam, 25 minutes to Buxton, or taking the Mrs for a nice night away in Sheffield ffs (as much as I love my birthplace) 😉

    But cheers for the suggestions

    Kirkby Lonsdale

    Masham – Black Sheep Brewery

Ripon – If you fancy a fight with squaddies/farmers

Edit: Oh well if Harrogate is too far, no chance for Masham or Kirkby. Kirkby would be 30 mins too far too 🙁

    Beverley

    +1

Don’t EVER be tempted to stay at the Minster Garth B&B though. The guy who owns/runs it is like an exaggerated version of Basil Fawlty.

I always check trip advisor before I book now.

I rate Beverley as well, lived near there for 2 years. I think your wife might thank you for taking her to Harrogate tho, if she likes shops and eating out.

Stamford, Lincs is nice to visit. Fairly quiet on an evening though and a little further than you’re after I think.

Haha, you’re not the first person to fall foul of said B&B in Beverley. The trip advisor can make for amusing reading too. I live here in Beverley and can heartily recommend it.

If you want a fantastic meal then to the Westwood Bar and Grill, it’s the best in town by a country mile.

There isn’t as much to do as there is in York, Harrogate etc but it is great for a weekend and pretty. Couple of good boozers such as Nellies and the Corner House and some other decent eateries too. If you’re looking for accommodation then would recommend the rooms that Whites have, they are supposed to be really nice and are in a good central location

    You suggested RIPON????

    Christ, no!

I would second Harrogate, Chester or perhaps Alnwick even?

As much as I like Lincoln, Cambridge is not that far away from you and has a large number of different places to stay, eat and go to for all budgets.

If you felt like punishing yourself, you could go to Milton Keynes.

    Helmsley? Lovely Hotels.

is the lamb and lion open again, it closed down didn’t it? Lovely place. I remember a great lazy afternoon spent in there with Mrs. warton, a christmas shopping trip that turned into an afternoon in the pub, Pre Kids. Oh the memories…

    perhaps Alnwick even?

? 2 hours from the Peak district??? try 4…
