  • Recommend me some shoes for clipless.
  • Been using Northwave Lizzards, but not impressed with the long term reliability.
Also, I think I would prefer something more water resistant. Not a full winter shoe, but something without mesh as my feet get soaked within the first few minutes of my commute as I ride through long grass.
Stiffest possible sole and must be vegan (no leather).

So far, Sidi Dominator and Specialized BG Expert are looking favourite.
    Any opinions or alternatives ?

Sidi, got some 10yr old road shoes still going strong and some 3-4yr old mtb shoes which are excellent. Comfortable, stiff and long lasting.

What do you reckon to the sizing ?
45 in both Northwave and Specialized seem about right for me.
Are Sidi the same ? I'll probably get them mail order so it would be nice to get it right first time.

don't sidi have "italian" sizing as in narrow footbed? this has always put me off buying them and there are good deals to be had

The Specialized BG shoes mostly have a mesh upper so your feet get soaked at the 1st sign of moisture.

I just take a spare pair of socks or wear sealskinz if it's really wet.

Hmmm, you're putting me off buying them mail order now.
I was hoping to wear them at SITS next weekend, so I haven't really got time to send them back and try another size if they don't fit. Especially if I want to wear them for a couple of days beforehand to make sure they are comfortable.
I'll try Worcester Cycle Centre tomorrow.
They haven't got much information on their website, but they're the only shop round here that's big enough to be likely to have a decent selection of shoes in stock.

Carrying a spare pair of socks is what I do now.
It's not too much of an inconvenience except that I then have to carry the wet socks home from work in my backpack or allow them to accumulate in my locker until I bring them all home in one go on a day when I drive in.

I've got pretty regular feet, and my Sidis are fine, not overly narrow or anything like that. Can't really recommend them highly enough TBH, they're comfy, scrub up like new, and last and last and last…..

Sidi's last for me too. Tried to kill them couriering in London, but I think it killed me first 😀

if this is for mtb spd, then my first foray spesh taho have been a wonder 2 years ago. but make sure you get a nice tight fit. I spent ages checking out fit in shops.

Sidi seem to be getting the best reviews so far then.
I'll see what they've got in Worcester today then. If I don't do any good there, I'll take a chance on the size mail order.

Incidentally, that wasn't me talking to myself four posts up. It looks like I left Mrs MTQG's computer logged in as me again.

Not a scientific test but i have a pair of the cheapest shimano mtb shoes with a lace keeper that are 5yrs old, heavily used and damned nr perfect still. I also have one or two mates with similar shoes, they are indestructible..

And for wet/cold days i use Shimanos winter boots. These have required a little bit of maintenence every now and again just to glue the tip and tail of the sole back in place but this is more to keep them looking good than because they are falling apart.

I bought some Sidi this week to replace some ailing Spesh shoes. My Spesh are a 42 and have plenty of room in them (41 are too small) and have bought Sidis in 42, the Sidis are smaller than the Spesh 42 but fit much better IMO. I also tried Shimano, Mavic and Bonty. None of which are as good as the Sidis.

Specialized + Sealskinz = brilliant. Not too expensive and comfortable, warm and dry

Nike yvr II, very comfortable all day, had my pair 5 years, still going strong, not sure of their vegan status though

Well, I phoned Worcester Cycle Centre and they only stock Specialized shoes and at the same price as everywhere else, so it wasn't worth driving down there.
Called in at Stourport Specialist Cycles on the off chance they might have something, it's only a small place and they don't keep a lot of stock in compared to the big city shops.
They had a pair of Sidi Dominators in 46. Tried them on and they were right for me, so that's what I've got now.
