If you’re going for a un-ramped set up get a SS specific chain, they a bit stronger for the massive power you’ll generate 😆

Depends on your setup. I run a entire 5/64″ (9sd) setup with a Renthal ring, Gusset SS sprocket and this KCNC X9SL chain for some pimp lightness.

sram pc1 nickel- reasonable price, pretty good at keeping off the rust.

unless you’ve got a 1/8″ sprocket it really doesn’t matter.

Sorry, should have given a bit more info – previously had an HG chain that came with the bike but it’s worn out as has the chainring so replaced the latter with a Surly stainless. Also using a WI freewheel, no chain tensioner.

    Thinking 1 1/8th but that’s about it.

KMC Kool for mega strength and reliability. The shape keeps it on the teeth even when quite slack too.

You can get drilled, slotted and coloured versions if you’re a tart

KMC Z82s are the chain of choice down here, they seem to be stronger than Shimano’s 7/8 speed offerings.

Big Ted, now you’re using the Surly ring remember to check your chainring bolts every so often. The Surly ring will flex under load more than an alloy ring and in extreme cases can break the bolt holes on the spider. I know.
On the plus side they look good, wear well and you can turn them round to use the other side of the teeth when they are a bit worn.

As above – SRAM PC1 Nickel. Cheap and basic, buts lasts a good time.

Tried a budget KMC effort and it lasted a few months.

Not impressed by SRAM pc1, my last nickel plated one lasted 3 months and I needed to replace the whole drive train it had stretched so much. Made of cheese me thing. Now using a taya bmx chain!

another vote for the SRAM PC1 nickel chain.

if you regularily clean and lube it, it should last ages.

I tried the SRAM one but it was really noisy, was this because I was using it with a used chainring and cog?
