Tragedy befell the family today down at the beach. I may have got a bit overzealous digging a trench to the sea, and snapped my lads brand new cheapo spade. There were tears, so many tears!!

I need something sturdy, but portable, and capable of being wielded by a (nearly) 3 year old. Any thoughts? Price is not at issue. It’s already cost me plenty in ice-cream and guilt.

I’ve dug some surprisingly big holes with one of these when in the military.

Sorry to wee on your chips but the roughneck is a shovel, might not be the easiest for a kid to dig with.

That round point one is brilliant.
I use mine for trail building, gardening and beach duties since we had a similar breakage/tears/Ice cream incident this spring!

I read the thread title and saw in my mind an unholy two-headed semi-mythical beast comprised of Jeremy Clarkson and Nigel Farage. Their respective heads (joined at the neck) faced in opposite directions so it was physically impossible for either to see the other. This only fueled their eye-rolling bickering-banter to lower heights as each tried to outdo the other with the most resonant deep comedy-smug voice:

    “Gary Coleman?”
    (Strains neck)
“No no NO, Mr T! Hur hur hur”

It is yes – even when you’re 6’6″. Gave my one to my 8 year old nephew so he could help my brother dig foundations for retaining walls in his garden. Better to hold than than the military folding ones I’ve used in the past which also seemed to need the collar re-tightening all the time to stop them from going floppy (and a bit finger-trappy for kids) but I’d say either a bit too big and heavy and too broad to grip for anyone younger than 7-8ish.

For someone nearly 3 have a look about in hardware and cookware shops for an aluminium scoop

I bought mine in a chinese supermarket.

You could have hours of fun with that Chinese shovel! Two or more people dig a big hole then fight and climb your way out of it, losers get to prepare the picnic at the top for the victor 😆

Cheers all. Roughneck is looking like a good shout-we’re still away and I see there is a screw fix just down the road. I might yet get forgiveness this holiday!
