I’m looking for a cottage to rent for a long weekend, preferably somewhere nice and desolate, in the country or by the sea. Not too bothered where, but would prefer somewhere with a big open fire!

Have a look at the Landmark Trust – not that cheap, but fill most of your criteria…

(Though you do need to supply your own firewood/coal!)
