    Looking @ a 40 mile hilly commute to work and back so need something nimble but ok for a bit off rough and tumble at the weekend with a tagalong that is attached via a rack (Isla tagalong)
    Will try the B2W scheme

    those new boardman rigid fork mtb’s look quite good – mtb’s with slickish tyres basically.

    I use a kona Jake the snake for a 40 mile round trip commute. Works well for me. I use road three for commuting but have an extra set of wheels if I want to use it off road at the weekend

    I commute daily on an On One Inbred 29er with thinnish tyres and a rack and panniers, plus pull a tag-along half the week. No compromise for weekend off-road (esp. if you can bothered to change tyres), but perhaps not as light as you’re after, bearing in mind the length of your commute.
