The Mentalist is addictive to watch, start at the beginning (obviously) so it all makes sense.

Also, if you like factual stuff, Whale Wars is a belter!

Dexter? I really rated the first few series.

If you want something lighter, I can’t recommend Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm enough. Both hilarious and really clever.

Oh yeah, Weeds is pretty good. Very similar to Breaking Bad, though it predates it, just a bit lighter.

Love/hate – the Irish version of the wire and has one actor from the wire in it.

Justified – Good for walton goggins fans after the shield

Sons of Anarchy is ok but a bit cheesy, Hells angels with relationship problems on rather sad bikes with ridiculously accented PIRA characters. I was reading a while ago that the lead, Jax, is a geordie and started off in Byker Grove

    Really enjoying ‘The Americans’ too.
‘House of Cards’ if you’ve got access to Netflix, Kevin Spacey is great in it (I found myself liking his character even though he is a despicable shit)

Ooooh, the original UK house of cards is always a series I wanted to watch, but never got round to. Now I don’t know whether to go with the UK or US version???

“Orange is the new black” on Netflix. Just finished watching all 13 episodes and it’s brilliant! Can’t wait for the next series now. 😀

Firefly. Won’t take long, but the memories will linger [Mal’s butt and Mal’s wife for two].

    Luther is awesome.

Banshee so long as you accept its completely ridiculous

Not enough votes for Justified. Fantastic underplayed characters and some truly wonderful dark humour that makes anything else look like it is trying too hard.

I’ll second Hannibal as best new series of the year. The Americans was good too.

Justified and Mad Men are the best running shows out there just now (after Breaking Bad). Spartacus is definitely worth a look too, if you get through the first 3 or 4 episodes before they realised they could make an interesting show.

I’d generally agree with all the other recommendations too, apart from SOA, which is well made but not a patch on most of the other shows mentioned here.

Luther is great but when your used to a losing yourself for a month in a box set if the wire British dramas are frustratingly short, almost claustrophobic.

Not that it’s in the same vein as much of the above but an exception to the rule is Ideal. They quietly put out 57 episodes, over 100 characters, superb cameos such as Mark E Smith as god.
