Does anyone know what actually causes a rear mech to snap off in very muddy conditions? I am thinking back to SITS last year when the mud caused a lot of problems with peoples rear mechs.

Does medium or long cage have anything to do with it? I am about to buy a new rear mech, so does anyone have any ideas what the +ve’s and -ve’s are of medium or long cage?
